January:_

So this month I have been mainly talking to people and sorting out who I am going to be doing what for, and when, as I have a few projects coming up if all goes to plan. Doing this I realised what would freak me out the most if I did this for a living, meeting deadlines! I think it would stress me out completely. I have given myself plenty of time, but if money was a priority, and deadlines tight, I think I would be a basket case (or a worse one anyway LOL).

Thankfully, paint pals kept me on the straight and narrow, and I was able to my aim of doing original work and some fantasy with a dragon eye. Although, one dragon eye is probably much like another, so how original can it be i guess. Still it came from my head so I'm counting it LOL.DSCF2523 (1280x895).jpg

Also, I did do this for my sister, a nice little challenge as I have done only 3 portraits before, and never this size. I deliberately kept it simple because of the size, but I realise I need to work on portraits a lot more. Having said that My mum and my Sis love it, and think it's a spot on likeness, so if they are happy, I'm happy.

The rest of the month has been spent playing with the new toys I got for christmas, and trying pinstriping. I had never thought this was for me, as my hand is as steady as jelly (jel-o??), and thought I didn't have a "feel" for the designs. Hubs had more faith and got me the stuff anyway, and I have surprised myself at how much I enjoyed it, and what I've been able to do. Obviously I have to invest many, many more hours, to get even close to being good, but I think becoming passable is acheivable. I will never be a master, as I love to AB too much to dedicate the time needed, (and god knows I need to put more time into ABing LOL) but as long as I'm enjoying it, it's all good. I'm particularly proud of my "dragon" http://www.airbrushforum.org/pinstriping/8758-dragonish.html . It's the first thing I properly thought about, and was totally freehand (although I know I need to get a grid). It's got plenty wrong with it, but I don't care, and hope one day to be able to come back and do it much better.

I still have the fantasy piece I talked about back in November (I think) to do. I haven't forgotten it (it won't let me, it's lurking in my brain), and hope to do bits here and there, but I admit the striping distracted me Lol.

I thought about getting into doing my own thing, not specific to custom commissioned work. Creating my own designs of catchy stuff that would appeal to varieties of people. Doing it this way would allow me to work at my own pace, my design process would pick up speed an efficiency in the process, then, maybe get into custom work.
I am going through a pretty decent book right now on the creative design process, I haven't started any of the exercises yet, but the concepts are great so far.

Great work on the Paint Pal, it really caught my eye when it was posted. :)

Best of luck with the pin striping, your doing really well at it for just starting out, like anything else, it will take tons of practice.

Good on ya mate for trying pinstriping , it's one aspect of custom work that looks really cool, I can imaging it's pretty hard to master!
Glad to see you are doing so well and getting work and getting stuck in, PP was a very cool dragon eye, been blown away by the standard this round!
You guys have reminded my to get my foot out of my butt and get back to my own log, had a disaster and deleted most of my paintings, what a bell end!
Keep up the great work lady squishy:)

Thanks for the encouragement Jeff! And for the link to the book too! It does look interesting. I am one of those people who, if I'm not in the right frame of mind, can't do things. I've tried to ignore those feelings and plough on, and the results haven't been good Lol, and usually end up leaving me frustrated and wishing I hadn't bothered, and my family pretending they don't know me LOL!. I guess it's like everything else though, it's something you have to learn to overcome, so this book could be exactly what I need.

I do stuff that is non specific sometimes. I have painted tanks etc, just because I had a design I wanted to try, and did them at my own pace. But I do choose something that I think will have a wide appeal, and have sold a few on fleabay. Not for stacks of cash, but definitely enough to make doing it worthwhile. Some I have done as display pieces, and have had quite a few queries, but not too many follow ups. I think I put people off, because I just want to make it clear that I am not a professional, and may take longer than a shop. I do it for my own piece of mind, and because I want to be able to enjoy painting something. Probably doesn't give the right impression though Lol, and of course, even though I don't charge much, as soon as money gets mentioned enthusiasm wanes. I think because you don't do it as a job, people think they can get it free, or that they are doing you a favour by letting you do it.

Thanks Kev! I am having a little flurry of work right now which is nice, I think it's a combo of a bit of word of mouth. Although I don't have that many followers on my facebook page, I have done a couple of things for people, and their friends have got in touch etc. Mostly though I think it's that time of year, when people are thinking about tarting up the bikes to get them ready to ride when (if) the weather clears.

I can't believe you lost all your photos aaaaarrrrgggghhhhh. Can you rescue them, or get some back from the forum, of the people you gave them too. That is a total bummer. But anyhoo, you are our log Guru, so you have to get on it Lol. I do double up in the log, as I've already waffled on about stuff on the forum. But I like to get together what I've done during the month, it keeps me on track, and makes sure I've been trying to keep to my aims, and shows if I've been slacking. And it's a just a great way to keep a record, that I will hopefully be proud of in a years time, and will show that I am progressing. Well maybe LOL!

Fortunately I have one of your masterpieces for my very own, so I know what you did last month :)

So i have totally been slacking when it comes to my log, and my goals have gone out of the window. Been a tricky few months. First was pretty sick for a while, and took me longer than I expected to recover, then hubs lost his job, and then trying to prepare for our daughters wedding in September without her knowing we are skint, and everyday life just generally getting in the way as it tends to do.

Or rather, if I'm honest, life has been giving me excuses, that I used to allow me to slack off.

Plus I've been feeling like I've hit a bit of a plateau airbrush wise. I just haven't been able to hit the next level, but in view of my slacking off, I only have myself to blame for that one LOL LOL LOL. Was pretty busy a while back, so Positive. Mental. Attitude. and I will get myself back on track!!!! I have done a few bits including a mind numbing repair job ( for the 4th time - poor bloke is accident prone), and obviously I did my paintpal (Paintpals for ever!!!!! love 'em!), and recently tried a cap.

So now I've given myself a kick up the arse (that does tend to make you fall over, much easier to get someone else to do it!), I'd better crack on and do something about it! Guess I'd better drag out the sketchbook and work on some ideas. Time to remember what I'm aiming for and do something about getting there!

Got a good project for your spare time to pencil out there Squishy....
A tatt idea I have with a full bodied dragon (yes w/ wings) Walking along side a wolf with Eagle flying over head.
There... the challenge has been set

Spare time... that moment when your looking around at all the things you should be doing, contemplating what you could be doing all the while still staring.

So after giving myself a good talking to, I got around to doing something I have wanted to do for a while, which is The mouth of Sauron.

http://www.airbrushforum.org/threads/lord-of-the-rings-mouth-of-sauron.10672/

I had kind of convinced myself it was too hard and put myself off trying it, and I did have a crisis of faith half way through, but even though there's plenty wrong with it - I'm pretty stoked with how it came out. I really tried to push myself with the mouth/teeth etc, and am pleased that it seemed to pay off. I really feel I could benefit from lessons in creating skin texture however. Actually a more truthful statement would be - I really need to put some effort in to practicing skin texture LOL!!! Cost of classes is just not feaseable, so nothing for it but try and muddle through.

Have I completed my goals this month? Well I got this finished, I feel I've pushed myself, and I really enjoyed doing it- so I can tick those boxes. But it's obviously not an original piece, and although I tweaked it a bit, I haven't put anything of me in there. So will have to think about that for the next piece.

Have been asked to design a couple of tattoo's which was a bit of a surprise. I've done one for my hubs before, but that's it. One is to cover some scarring after an accident and surgery. So that could be fun.
