Practicing flames

Helo every one, we'll this is why I want to learn to do flames first. The second pic is my first try. Here I was just trying IMG_0066.JPGResized_20160511_111136.jpeg trying to see what work. And what colors would do the best for me.

Your colours look fine to me, all you need to do now avoid patterns and try not rely too much on stencils, it has to look like a natural flow so try to do as much as you can free hand using your stencils only for the valleys between the flame licks, your flames can also use a little white in some spots to make your flames even hotter, then you'll have a hit bike, work on giving your skulls some depth by adding more shading and shadows, excellent practice attempt otherwise:thumbsup:

Not a bad start. There are some good tutorials about sowing different ways to get good flames... Less is more IMHO...

Also depends on what kind of flames you are attempting - stylised/hot rod or tru fire! Looked a bit too intense for me but thats just opinion :) - inferno :)
Mike Levellee and Craig Fraser are my favourites for this,

Your colours are good though :)

image.jpeg Thank Malky. I hear what your saing about the stencils. Im just practicing and seeing What I can do for now. As you can see in this other pic. There is a long way to go. But to tell you the truth. It's all good I kind of finding that it is relaxing to me when I pick up the airbrush. This one that I started, and when I was close to finishng it I relised somethings. You guys have and old saying and that is paint what you see not what your brain is telling you. And that is exactly what I did when I started this one image.jpegI was using my braind. That's a when I notice that some of the flame if you call it that it look hot rod flame. Ok let's SI is I can find the nex pic.

Ok , some how I bump post. So let me start again so I can shou you a couple of pic that I have doneimage.jpeg This is the first lair pic. For paint I use transparent red and yello and detail withe from wicked. For airbrushed I use the IWTA Hp-CS. And the Royal max M-180image.jpegThis is the finish product. If you want to call it that.

This is what I started today. Using cratex transperent red and yellow and wicked white .image.jpeg I'll try and start the second layered tomorrow. I'm steel using my IWATA HP-CS and The ROYAL MAX 180 . By the way I'm using the same colors and mixture as Mitch airbrush tutor. Everything that's in here that's what I painted with.

Some quick tips

Don't fill it all up, if you leave some black visible you'll get a lot more depth in the flames. You can fill the bottom part where the flames originate and are hottest but going up they tend to gradualy fade.

Als try to make flame "licks" a flame has shape and form, an origin and end. Look at some pictures of flames, pick a lick you like and try to coppy that till you get a feel of how flames "behave"

I definitely like your colours so you have no problem at all there (I think), in your second photo here you've managed to lose the over stenciled look, but your white would be at hottest part of the fame, so near the bottom, although this looks like little trees in some places it's still more natural, I have every faith you'll get this down very quickly since you clearly listen to advice and obviously know what you want:thumbsup:

A handy little tip for you which I think will help you a lot, like a lot of people I subscribe to Netflix and just a short while ago I came across a video/film an hour long of a wood burning fireplace, which I suppose was intended to be used as a screen saver, but if you could find that or download a real fire or fireplace screen saver to your computer, you could either pause it or take screen shots to give you a better idea how flames behave, you'll certainly be able to see just how random it is:)

I noticed my friend @musicmacd mention the different types of flame jobs, I think it's wise to learn them all because getting these down would make you very popular in the hot rod and chopper world, I rarely ever comment on flame attempts mainly because I gave up after the first try, but also because I have seen some pretty half arsed attempts and to avoid causing some poor bugger to commit suicide I just keep quiet;) the only reason I take an interest here is because I see potential:thumbsup: especially since it's obvious you are very willing to learn and are happy to change your approach based on the advice you receive:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks guys, this is whys I'm here I like that you guys the profetinal at this are wiling to comment and critic on what your trying to do but at the same time give guidance. Haasje thanks for the link. But I already read it lol. I have been lurking around and checking to see if I can get some good ideas from every one else or I mean pointers. Thank Malky for your suggestion, for some reason I got it stuck in my head that the colors were more important then the flame licks. Like Haasje suggested that's something I got to work on. And another problem that I have is that I have painted hot rod flames and that's what use to be most famous in the hot rod world. If you notice on the number 3 pic some of the Flames look like hot rod flame. I realize that last nigh. That's why I mention paint what you see not what you think. Like so many of you been saying all along. Thank again I'll be working on it.

Ah,, the flames... Your off to a great start, your colors are good! Flames are the hardest thing to recreate... Some of us on here still cant get em.... My advice, is practice...lots and lots of practice. I painted flames forever it seemed, before my brain finally clicked, and went ah...ok got it now. With flames and first timers (myself included), Ive noticed that we tend to group as much of it together as possible, when in actuality, thats now how flames are. Less stenciled also, go a little more free hand, use the sheild/stencil as a guide. When starting a lick, back off the object some, and just dust a lick, let it flow weird (lol), lightly...and then take the shield, and add a hard line to an edge of the lick, widen it out some, and DONT fill in the are with solid white (assuming your painting over it), let the background show through. Ive not an expert by any means at flames, but Ive got another friend that wants to see my step by steps on how I do them. (havent had time) Sometimes, if Im nice, they are more yellow,. sometimes when Im pissy, they are more red lololol Just keep it up, your doing great on learning them!!

Hey Musicman thank, yea it is kind of busy LOL But that was the firs try. But I like that you guys can cretic my progress and not pound on me for how bad it is. PS I got two of the flame I'm gone have to look for stylish flame. To see what they look like. Thank you to MarkThomson, I have been lookin around on tutorials I mean lots. I even purchase some videos wich I should be getting today, not on flames but all in general couse flames is not the only thing that I want to do.

No one here will ever pound you Johnny, that's what makes this forum the best there is, you know what you want, we want you to get it (and you will) so together we will do everything in your power to make sure you get it, as I said I can see your working hard and taking the lot in so your worth it, and your first attempts are incredible for the short time you've been practicing, I'll give a month or two, possibly less and you'll be teaching us, which I will welcome, there a lot of incredible artists on here and they all started out just like yourself, they all say they owe their success to the advice on this forum, but they owe to the fact that they actually used that advice as it was intended:thumbsup:

Hey MeesheLLMP, thank for the tip on stencil. I will give it a try at some point. But for now I'm gone keep trying the free hand just because that's what I would like to do on my bike. Again but! if I can't get the free hand I'll start using the stencil.

The shields will come in handy for highlights and low lights ;) Mine are basically, I start with one lick, then use the shield to "widen" it out, and then reverse the shield, back to back with the lick I just made, then free hand...So hard for me to describe lol:eek:

MeesheLLMP, I think I understand what your teling me. I saw a tutorial from Chuck Bouman were he explain it kind the way your teling me. He made his own stencil, then when he cut them he use the positive and the negative as an example. He put them side by side but he flip the negative and it shows how the flame comes together. Kind of net the way he shows it.
