Hello from South Florida

Mac-Valve Maestro!
Hello name's Todd, living in Lauderdale by the Sea. Somewhat newby airbrusher, though probably started a decade ago, trying to work out of an apartment and being terribly unorganized I didn't get to far with it, using a bcs eclipse I finally bought a iwata duel power jet... and it sat for 7 years or so as I started a resurfacing company(painting tubs/counter/cabinets) that has occupied all my time.

For some back round I'm a painter/body man by trade, I started working in body shops as a teen in the mid 80's, then taking vocational automotive body repair in high school, never was much of a bolt turner but took to body work and painting, base coat/clear coats was just coming in, lacquers were going out. Also worked painting houses(int/ext) and some faux finishing.

Left the body shop in the mid 90's and got a job as a painter at a large exterior sign shop, that went into being a color matcher, then they had a creative systems part and because I could bondo I helped on some interesting projects for coke and luxor hotel, started helping sculpting foam/hdu, eventually went into the graphics/designer part learning PS/illustrator and Flexi Sign, also learned some hand paining sign skills and did some walls. Had 14 years in the biz.

So for the last month I've been airbrushing, I think I got a lot of problems out of the way over the years with the gun itself after destroying 20 or so nozzles, learned to be more gentle, got some proper cleaning tools, I've mostly painted some of my foam sculptures and a couple body paints over time. I now have a small warehouse and a workspace, hoping to put some of my body/sign experience together and do some art, at the moment I have no clear focus where I'm going with it so for now just for fun, look forward to learning.

Looking to buy another gun but for now I have -

Iwata dual power jet pro
Iwata eclipse hp-bcs
Paasche (I think) VL
Iwata Lph-80 (just bought)

For the moment using Golden airbrush paints and Endura body paints.

Thanks for looking :D:alien:

Hello from Texas! Sounds like you already have several skills that can carry over into airbrush. Have you watched any of the Airbrushtutor videos on YouTube? Those helped me a lot. And they're entertaining :)

Hey hey - welcome from New Zealand... You've got some fun sounding toys and another Golden fan! Yay. Look forward to seeing some of your work.

:D welcome Todd,
isn't it funny how even with lifes twists and turns somehow we wind up back at the start  I started because I was sculpting foam and wanting a way to easily add colour and detail, turns out the hairy brush was easier, and I've discovered art is fun.........

make sure you pop some pics of all aspects of your 'painting' journey, we love to see evidence of people that make a living out of what most of us will only ever call a hobby.

Thank you everyone, I have watched numerous airbrushing tutorials off youtube and here, some great artists here! One failing I've had as an artist is following through on projects, I'm not a confidant artist(and mentioned unorganized but working on that one) and maybe I get to a point on a project where I don't know where to go with it and it sits unfinished, I'd like to take the next step. Right now I have some newsprint and I'm just trying to let some paint fly.

For my other hobbies/interests - I'm a bassist(double and electric)/singer(put this down with the rest of my art 7 years ago,) I have an eccentric taste of different music. I love to surf and scuba dive (I do a bit of pole spear fishing,) I love old Samurai and Kung Fu movies, traveling/food/drink, maybe to much of the latter over the years.

Time can be limited as my business still takes a lot of time, I also have many hvlp guns and sprayers set up to spray the nasty tub paint and spec for the counters. Having a workplace for the first time in my life I have no excuses, I'm have a lot of things already like strainers, rags, thinners and degreasers on hand. Did I long hard look at how people set up their workshops to get better organized.

Here is one of my airbrushed sculptures I did some years back, made out of styro and hardcoated. A Brazilian rainbow boa.

Hi welcome from the UK. You got skills, now all you need is time and confidence.

Have no fear, many of us here have no art training, or art background whatsoever, but as you can see looking around, are fab artists now.

I didn't even do art at school after the age of 12, and was beyond clueless, and am getting there slowly but surely. You will do just fine.

As long as you don't mind some constructive crit (no trolls here, only genuine advice), when you get to the point you don't know what's next, post up some pics and the guys will talk you through it.

Thanks Squishy(love the name). I'm all about constructive crit, I'm my own worse crit but that doesn't usually come with the constructive part:thumbsup:

Lol lol, you'll fit in well then, we are usually too hard on ourselves. I have major hissy fits, but when the family come running ( to save me from what must be a rampaging axe murderer judging by the shouting and swearing they hear), and see me dramatically flailing my arms and gnashing my teeth at what I "ruined" , they cant see anything wrong. They just roll their eyes, look at me with disdain, leave me and get on with their lives. Apparently I get over dramatic. They don't understand the pain lol lol lol.

Quick question, I'm just doing some freehand airbrushing on newsprint I'd like to post, these are for practice and also to make myself jump into it, don't think each thing deserves it's own thread should I just make a freehand thread and post them all in that thread in the wip/finished section?

I'm taking pics as I go but I'm all for someone telling me I should of did this first or that.

go ahead and make a thread in either 'work in progress' or 'general airbrush discussion'.
I did one awhile back in General airbrush discussion (jackeb's journal of a newbie) and you can just update it as you go. Lots of folks will help and guidance if needed
