Adhesion Promotor Vs Primer

Draxden

Double Actioner
So I've been painting controllers and things of that nature for quite some time now. I've always used a base black primer just to help the paint stick and do it's primer duties. I've always heard a lot about adhesion promoter, so I was just curious as to if you guys think that would work better when using wicked colors, on plastic, or if I should stick with my black primer?

I may be wrong but the adhesion promoters I've previously used are mixed in with the paint. I'll be interested to know if there are ones that are applied separately. I also suspect the primer will suffer the same sort of problem as the top coat... lets see what others say... we can both learn!

When painting anything plastic I always apply upol adhesion promotor in spray can . Then prime over the top and then prep paint as normal . I have never had any adhesions using this method .

Createx do a 'flexible adhesion promoter' - primarily designed for latex masks but I don't see why it wouldn't work on other plastic surfaces, it can be sprayed like a primer or mixed with the paint....

'Autoborne sealers' can be used on plastic without issue

I have always used Bulldog and the Createx Light or Dark sealer and the do my painting.

I use autobourne sealers direct to MOST plastics. However there are times im going to use s high build auto primer and i do use adhesion promoter. Personally i like duplicolors ap.
Autobourne sealers have never let me down when used right.

I have only used the sealers on the plastic, after a good scuff using a red scotch pad. Everyone so far has been bullit proof. I have used alot of masking on some, and had no pull ups at all...
When using the sealers, start with a dust coat and build heavier after that

I have a pretty decent prep routine I feel; I use sanding sponge to rough up the surface, wipe it down with alcohol, and do 2 layers of black primer, and let dry. I've never gotten and pull up before. I mask off a lot as well, using tape and vinyl. I've only ever had problems on the sharp edges. I just figured I would see if I could further increase the quality.

Adhesion promoter is normally used when painting plastic. it goes down first then primer then base coat . While a lot of people will say if your prep work is right you do not need but I have found over the years that things I have used adhesion promoter on are still holding up well and the things I did not need repainted .
But catch 22 if you are using say Krylon's Plastic primer it has it in there already .
and I have found a few of the after market controllers will melt if you use a urethane primer LOL I think it is more the reducer then the primer but nothing like pissing off your 18 year old when you ruin a new controller LOL :D

Oh man, that would be horrible lmao. I've just found that basic black rustoleum primer, has bee my best friend when it comes to priming. A few of my items have a lot of black on them, so I just prime then controller/nerf gun, and take that part off. No more paint added on top of it. It's always worked for me =D
