mmm looks like I need to find a alternative for the Schoellershammer

Air-Valve Autobot!
Just went out to buy a few sheets Schoellershammer 6G to find out my local art store has stopped selling it :( I know I have tested a different brand but I cant remember witch brand that was , I know it wasnt Canson bristol board as that doesnt hold op to scratching .
I know I should have made notes but I never expected to run into this problem , I can still order the Schoellershammer boards but I only use that for commissioned work as it is to expensive to just play around and practice work

I know clay board is real good , but like the shoellershammer boards I find it to expensive that is why I want a alternative for the paper

Make your own clayboard, that's how I do it and it ends up costing a few bucks (roughly $1.75-$2.25) for a A2 size.

If you want help with the process just let me know.

what so you use to make a clayboard ? I mean the claypart as I can use MDF for the board

From trial and error I found that recipe does not make a board like original ampersand clayboard...

First off get white kaolin clay it is much much cheaper to get 5lbs or 5kg vs a 1lb bag.
Also get fine rabbit skin glue not the cheap kind that is all chunks.
The fine ground RSG doesn't smell horrible like the cheap chunks do.

This is my recipe
2C water
3T RSG
1t RSG
2C white kaolin
White pigment

Bring water to 110-115 F NEVER let the mixture get above 125F.

Add your ground RSB and mix until all crystals are dissolved and it looks like ice tea.
Then sift your white kaolin clay and pigment to remove any lumps.
Add your clay/pigment to the RSG water mixture.
Once it is all together and looks like pancake batter allow it to sit for a minimum of 3hrs preferably overnight.

Once your ready to to apply reheat it to 110-120F and apply to your substrate.
If using mdf or hardboard apply a coat or two of PVA primer "kilz" brand or similar product before the clay mixture.

You can brush it on or use a detail 3"/4" roller... I use the roller so there is less sanding.

If more details are needed or specific product info please let me know.

Also for anyone in the USA that wants to try this but doesn't want to buy a bunch of materials I can send you enough to do a A4 piece where you just need to add water to the powder and slap it on.
