Any ideas how to do this?

Forgive me if this is not the place for this, but I can't seem to find the info anywhere!
I'm spray-painting artworks using automotive paints, the same basic materials I believe the airbrusher uses, and Iv'e hit a block which I really need help with.
What I tried - I sprayed a red metallic colour base (using Glue Devil from a can), once dry I lay a vinyl stencil and sprayed a 2k silver with spraygun. The 2k softened the base metallic colour (and actually mixed with it to give a slightly metallic pink - no silver!) and also reacted with the vinyl. Total disaster!

What I'm trying to figure out - how to stop the two paints reacting. I thought maybe laying a coat of clear (2k) between the red metallic from a can, and the silver 2k. I did an experiment and the clear coat works fine over the red metallic, hardens and cures well, but the 2k silver ontop of the clear coat does not work - it softens the clear coat AND the red metallic beneath it!
The problem I think could be solved if I could find a silver metallic sprayable acrylic (not from a can - they all go dull flat lead with any lacquer or clear coat, even epoxy dulls them to lead) which I could spray ontop of the clear coat, and then spray another clear coat ontop of that.

This is a complex challenge needing a little light.

Like material will reactivate . Plus what are you calling dry ? and why all 2 k products ?
When you say from a can do you mean rattle spray can ?
What are you paint this on . Due to you only have 1 post you are not allowed to upload images .
Pop on over to the introduction section http://www.airbrushforum.org/introductions/ and tell us about yourself .
Are you spraying this in a booth ( being 2k I sure hope so) being doing that in the USA is illegal due to the ISO's 2k and most urethane put out.
Hvlp spray gun would be the way to go . Plus you could do a lot of this with Wicked /Wicked Detail and AutoAir paints then use a 2 k clear over the entire thing.

Hey Mr.Micron,
by dry I mean I let it sit for 2 days until the paint was hard, yes it's from a rattle spray can.
The reason for using 2k was I wanted to get that bright shiny car finish, something to really pop, so I built a make-shift spray booth (with extraction) and got a cheap spray-gun. An automotive shop near me sells paint and they have been helping me figure out how to spray.
A little background here might help -Initially I sprayed a small round piece (on dibond) with rattle cans (the same metallic paint as I talked about before) and then created a 3D face made from sculpted pieces and sprayed them silver (from a rattle can) - I then poured a layer of epoxy resin over the lot and it turned out great - aside from the epoxy killing the silver on the pieces.
From there I decided to try a bigger piece using automotive paints for the background as well as the pieces - I sprayed a white base-coat with a black vignette (they were 2k as recommended by the shop), and then I sprayed a 1k colour (blue) over that and it reacted badly, wrinkled up. I had to redo it. The shop said to stick to the same - so 2k over 2k, to solve the issue, so I swapped the 1k blue for a 2k. It worked fine. I poured a layer of resin over that and embedded the structural pieces (which I had sprayed 2k silver) into the wet resin - and then poured another layer of resin over that.
It worked well but I have issues with the resin, so I decided to try using clear coat instead. And with this new piece instead of 3D structure I decided to make a flat image using a stencil.
Yeah the gun I have is an HVLP, a cheapo for now (Voylet) but until I can do better it will do.
I don't know those Wicked /Wicked Detail and AutoAir paint products - will have to look to see if they are available in South Africa
Thanks for the uploading photo tip - will head over to the introductions area now

So the good news is that Wicked paints are available in South Africa, not my city Cape Town, but I can order in from Johannesburg.
Now I have to figure out if they are sprayable with Hvlp guns.

Make sure you get the proper 4012 reducer with it. Order more reducer as you almost always use more than paint eg: 1 drop paint : 3 drops reducer

Thanks for the info Lee,

looks like another learning curve but hopefully less steep than the automotive paints (had another wobble tonight as the clear-coat I sprayed wrinkled on part of the picture...still have to figure that one out...).
Also, the guy who sells Wicked in South Africa says he keeps little stock so he may have to order in - me thinks I'm going to have to save up for a decent mini-spray -gun to save on paints, Wicked in SA is quite costly it seems.
Even so, I really hope I can make the move to Wicked soon, I really don't like the toxicity of the stuff I'm using.

Sounds like the paint underneath hadn't gone off /gassed off totally. As for the wicked @AndreZA may know another supplier you could use, he is in Jo burg though.

I think the price of all the Createx products are quite reasonable over here. Are you using Airbrushwarehouse? BTW, are you part of the Facebook group? Link in my signature.

Hey Andre,
Yeah man Airbrushwarehouse it seems is the sole distributor of Createx in SA. I have not yet tried their paints - busy with a number of pieces already begun with regular auto-paints, so need to begin testing out the water-based stuff and go from there. Funds are done for this month as well o_O
Thanks for the fb group link will join up!
