Thickness of 4030

Hey Guys,
I've tried searching the forum but couldn't find the info I'm after. I bought some 4030 to use as an additive. I have it a shake before opening it and noticed that the agitator hardly moves through the paint. When I opened it, there were chunks and strings of the product in the top. I fitted my strainer to the top of the bottle as I do with all the other paints and have tried it a couple of times. Every time i use it, I end up with small chunks in the bottom of the cup. So it's strained and mixed, reduced with 4012 and left to sit for 10 mins or so. Is this just the way the product is? Or do you think there's something wrong?

Contact DaveG about this. He says he uses it. I am thinking about ordering some and would like to know the same answers.

I'll see if he picks up on this thread, if not will tag him in it. I have put the same question to Createx through their website too. So I'll be sure to let you know what they say.

I would say it's a bad bottle as mine is not that thick and the ball moves well in it,How old is it?If it's a new bottle bring/send it back for a new one

I bought it on the 25th of September, so it's not old.

Just to throw this out there. But we discussed 4030 a little while ago when used with 4012. Fred and I both have had very poor luck using 4012 with 4030.
I know others have used it (4012 + 4030) and pros have used it, but I have had no luck. I mean 100% failure every time. I only use 4012 in the Autoborne Sealer. No paints.
So I switched to 4020 and let it melt in and guess what.. it opened up a whole new world of paints, including 4030, I had written off. I can actually use my wicked white. I had wrote it off years ago and replaced it with Etac or Trident.
Also, I just checked 2 new bottles of 4030 and the mixing balls are very slow in those as well.

4030 should be fairly thin. This is not the first thread I have read that for some reason the bottle started to kick off and cure before opening. Contact your vendor or drop Createx a line, and I am sure one of them will get you sorted out. I don't use 4030 all the time, and never use is outside of being mixed 50/50 with 4012 as a reducer for my colors... just finished spraying a background with the mix an hour or so ago without issue.

Also keep in mind Createx messes with formulation. I have 2 different 4030 bottles. One calls it an intercoat clear...very thick. The other has no mention of intercoat and seems to be thinner. I wouldn't be surprised if they made some of the early bottles with a thicker formulation.

Thanks Leaky, I read that more as an issue with mixing, than the 4030 itself. But I will look at trying some 4020 after I get this bottle sorted.

Thanks Dave. I have sent Createx an email and will speak to the vendor Monday morning. The one time I got it through the gun I really liked the paint flow, so I do want to get to grips with it.

Mines paint consistancy and its 12 months old, no strings or blobs. Bad bottle @SiRoxx
Cheers Lee I appreciate the info. It's certainly looking like a bad bottle, so I'm hoping the seller will swap. I bought it from The Airbrush Company (airbrushes.com) and they've been good so far.

Ok, I’ll just add to this seeing as 4020 was mentioned.
4020 automotive reducer should only be used where you have proper ventilation eg: body shop type of ventilation, a box fan isn’t up to it.
4020 contains acetone which is what helps ‘melt’ the pigment.
You can make your own small batch rather than buy a whole bottle by adding 5-10% acetone to 4012. Add your paint, Mix, let it sit for a minute or two then mix again. And WEAR A RESPIRATOR. Not just a dust mask! Backflush while painting periodically
I’ve used this recipe and it works well but I’ve also got the proper respirator and I don’t use the mix all the time.
I don’t want to hear anyone saying they’ve been spraying this stuff without masking up. If you value your lungs then protect them. I have lung issues and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone!

Rant over, carry on.

I was told to only use the 4020 automotive reducer with the 4030 .
But my 4030 is a couple of year old and still is not even close to being that thick .

Thanks for the info and pointing out a safety tip is not a rant LOL. That's just responsible and showing care for the community.
I have a proper respirator that I use when I'm painting anything, including regular water based. I don't have body shop ventilation, but the place I paint is pretty well ventilated as in it's very hard to get and keep it warm.
I've got in the habit of letting all my mixtures sit for 5 - 10 mins. Even with 4012 it seems to help, but could be my imagination.

Thanks Herb, it does seem that 4020 would help and it's good to know that another user hasn't had the issue of the thickness. I've been trying to find videos of 4030 being mixed, just to see the consistency, and found one of the official Createx videos. There the 4030 looks more like Trans Base in terms of the thickness. My 4030 is definitely not like that.

Yes I always wear a mask. Now while I had it off in that short video but that was 3 minutes out of 30 minutes of painting.
Plus I paint in a ventilated area.
