Selphy airbrush?!

A Selphy Airbrush sounds like a good way to end up with paint in your eye LOL.

Dude seriously... watch a video. In their eyes, up their nose, in their mouth. Its like Step 1: Insert airbrush (or my favorite term, "makeup wand) into mouth. Step 2: Pull trigger. Step 3: Take a deep breath.

Ok rant over- to get back on topic, I wonder how this will spray? They don't seem to spray makeup very well!

Holding an airbrush without the valve in your palm feels weird. With my Aztek it just feels wrong. Feels if there is nothing to hold onto.

When I saw this tool appeared at Foxy, I wanted to start the same thread as you've created. But having read the description for this AB, I've become not interested for the reason it features H&S nozzle, which I don't like (only an opinion of mine).

Though, I wonder what you will say, especially after you've sold your Infinities;)

It reminded me of one vintage AB I have in the collection:

Wow that’s a cool airbrush! I sold the infinitys because I didn’t like the feel of the triggers.

Yeah that’s one of my concerns too, very curious about this one!

Where is the video?! I did not see it?!

I feel like this is just a psychological hiccup, not an a real ergonomic issue. I mean, you don't miss the valve stem when using a pen, or pencil, or hairy brush do you? They're all just sticks you draw lines with, so it should just be matter of realizing when your brain is applying a category distinction that's more Pavlovian than rational.

You learn to hold airbrushes the way you do because they have a valve stem, rather than them having the valve stem there to facilitate a particular grip. But if you're airbrushing all the time, you might get so used to it that you forget that, and it feels like it it's intended to be that way instead of forced to be that way, which in turn makes you retroactively categorize it separately from other line drawing tools. So something like this ends up feels "wrong" even though it's just bringing it back closer to the same ergonomics of every other stylus tool that isn't forced into an odd shape by outside needs. Tools which you learned to use long before an airbrush, and continue to use alongside the airbrush without it feeling wrong. It's like a placebo of wrongness.

If I had the money to splash around, I'd totally want to try one of these. Give it a lightweight poly hose w/ no quick connect or other faff between, and it might actually feel way more natural and more like drawing/painting with a regular pen or hairy brush.

Looking over the photos again, the main issue I see is the trigger is IMO located too far back for the ergonomics it's going for. When gripping a pen or pencil or hairy brush, one usually grips somewhere in the front 1/3. There are exceptions of course for when you're backing off and using a "wand" grip to make really broad loose strokes, but generally for the majority of stuff, you hold nearer the front.

The trigger on an airbrush defines where you MUST hold it. The trigger here is right in the middle, both of the length, and of the spindle shape. This means it'll probably still feel awkward and inoptimal compared to a pen. I think it needs a "bullpup" trigger or a longer aft body piece. Both of which might be easily doable as mods, but it would be better for the product to be like that as-is. Also IMO the trigger is too tall. For pen like ergonomics, a very very short trigger further forward on the body would be better. Like an almost flush trigger that's alongside the cup, so the cup rests diagonally between the thumb and index finger tips of a standard pen grip. Again, probably not hard to mod, especially if you're making a "bullpup" trigger mod too.

I like what they're trying to do, but feel like they only did a perfunctory design job to that end.

Right! definitely seems like a good candidate for an adapter and a badger hose.

Two weeks earlier than expected!! So cool! It feels really solid and well made, very ergonomically correct and very smooth! Can’t wait to try it out in my studio this afternoon!! Tried taking it apart but decided to do this later because it looks quite complicated haha!

This thing is totally INSANE!!! I can't believe how awesome it is! It's SOOOOO well made!! I've been painting with it for two hours now and I've never painted so well in my life! I just fling the hose over my shoulder so cool! Then the grip is just perfect, nice and thick! Feels so good in your hands! The trigger is insane, you don't operate the air, it's all combined in pulling the trigger back! You have sooooo much control, it's so damn smooth! I paint without the crowncap and the lines I can get are bloody thin!!! The amount of paint I use seems to be far less for some reason too! I did take it apart before I started painting and the simplicity is so cool! Far less parts than a "NORMAL" airbrush and such good quality and robust. I just can't get over this airbrush!!! It's just crazy how well this is made!

Now you've got me all interested again. Hows the atomization?
It’s really really good! It’s an awesome airbrush!! Used it for about 5 hours today! I’m totally in love with it!!

It looks like unbelievable AB appeared on the market:)
How do you find it compared to CM-SB? I mean control of starting the spraying, pulling the line, line consistency, thickness of the lines. Could you make a test for both models on one surface with the same paint, line close to line and dots to dots etc?
For what you've said about H&S nozzles type sounds unbelievable:)

I found these on Amazon here in the states for $125 if anyone is interested... seems like a decent price if it works that good.

Since it appears to be based on H&S design in a lot of areas (possibly made by H&S?), how's the part compatibilty? Are the nozzles and needles interchangeable with H&S parts? Would make the decision extra easy if replacement or alternate parts could be sourced from H&S vendors instead of having to look specifically for Airtex branded parts.

When I looked into this, It actually kind of seems like it might be the other way around. Not the design part of course. But you know,Like Airtex has actually been making most of H+S's parts (possibly in taiwan) Since like 2002 or so.
It's speculation based on info off of airtex company site history and some finance reports and the fact that H+S suddenly quadrupled their production with like 10 employees right after they started business with airtex.
Could be wrong but that's my theory.

I think I only paid 80 pound for it. I bought it from Amazon and it arrived from Japan pretty fast
