Here's one video, you can make the box any size you want and yiu can find bigger plastic sheets than this guy mentions, but the video will give you a good idea of how easy it is and also how cheap it can be, you probably have everything you need already in your garage or shed.

 
To do what you've posted as smooth as they look you're looking at over $2000, I've seen the quality of machines under a $1000 and it's not what I woukd like on my desk, the plastic needed to feed your printer is also expensive, you may get 2 of those bigger racks out one roll, you really would need to be earning from it to warrant the cost of one.

I can't remember who it is but we do have a member that has started airbrushing 3D printed models, maybe he could advise you better.

You are wrong @Malky, l’ve got two Home made 3D printers for under $300 each and they outperform that print easily, it’s all depends on the settings and knowing what you are doing, it a very stepped learning curve to print something.

@J000seph , the issue is not the cost of the filament as they are not expensive, talking about abs or pla(cheapest and the one to go), the issue is that that could be a 20+ hours print just for one of those!!

I wouldn't say wrong, Home made vs buying a system are quite different.

As far as filament, lets just say you could do one with a single 1kg spool, still $20. which is about what one of those racks is worth.

But yeah i was alluding to the time involved mostly also. Thats the killer.

Printing a mold however, to be used either with FRG layup or vacuum formed abs could be semi practical. If you could sell a ton of them.

3d printer world is open source, like linux you pay for support and plug and play machines! The only difference between home made and pay printers are electronics and linear motion, and you can buy the same that uses the high end printers!

In fact the printers factories use the users and cloners mods in their new printers. And the firmware are exactly the same in factory or home made as most of them use marlin! You just have to know what to use according what you want to accomplish in your printer

and what would a premade system cost that would be compareable to yours?

Malky stated the cost of buying one, not building one. So where was he wrong?

I dont beleive the componets of that spinning rack would wiegh less than ... as your saying less than half a kilo. But i could be wrong there. it was just an example anyhow.

But i totally agree that time is the limiting factor here more than anything.

By all means if your that concerned with the number of parts from the spool though i welcome you to run it through fusion or cura or whatever you use and tell us how much material would be involved....personally im not going to bother since whether it takes $5 worth of material or $20 doesnt really change its viability, as we have both pointed out.

Yep when i look at a piece of plastic and say " eh that probably weighs more than 500g" what i really mean is "im a 3d master yo!"
+-.01 mm from a home 3d printer, LOL. I'll just ask a unicorn to poop them out.
Im sure you can do that with aluminum too
And i guess what you said would take 20 hours print time would take 60 to cutlol (maybe 3 max)

I mean if were talking industrial, id say just injection mold the things and make thousands a day
Or wait, you think it would be more efficient to produce them via sla ???

Look, don’t know your equipment, i spend two years using, designing and debugging my machines(cnc, 3d printer and laser), i’ve study a lot of hours, tested a lot of pieces and wasted a lots of spools, and you came and tell me that you are an expertise because you had printed 12 pieces and tell me what can or cano’t be done, when first of all I wasn’t talking to you, it takes way more than dozens print just to know your printer, every time you change spools no matter if they are the same brand, you have to tweek you settings again, if someone open a door and the wind blowed over the printer you have to start again, and so on, no matter if it is a diy or a very expensive machine.
I said prototyping and not production industries, and just think about it, what makes a cnc milling machine be precise? The motors electronics and linear motion, and you can get the same for your 3d printer, my home made printer is printing with x,y = 0,05 mm and z= 0,06 right now, of course it took me a lot of try and errors, learn a lot of new things and I’ve only paid 350 u$ for the parts, believe it or not.
Nobody knows it all, not you and surely not me, so don’t say to some one what can or cannot be done without first knowing his background, his experiences, I believe everyone here talks about what they really had learning with their own experiences.
Forgive me if I misunderstood your post but you always sounded to me like if you believed that your true is the only true, and there are a lot of truths not just only one! May be my bad english I don’t know. Spread the love!

Never claimed to be an expert, just wouldnt have said malky was outright wrong.
And took a guess at what the plastic in that spinning rack would weigh.

Yeah .05 is about what id get on a really good day , with careful planning w cutting. Lucky to get .5 out of the printer (Probably due to dwell times and such being off), and couldnt dream of a nice smooth contour. Plus each part would take 3-4 times as long as i could cut.

I'm genuinely curious though, would you really be able to get 18 of those wheels from one spool in order to make two racks from a spool?

I am more than happy to accept that I'm wrong here Marcos, but my take was based on information I got from a shop assistant, the cost of the machine in that shop and the poor quality of the samples laying around the same machine.

I don't mind being corrected when it comes from someone who knows their onions:thumbsup::)

Hmm, 612g for a rack like the one pictured.........:lipssealed:.. had you asked how many times i used A 3d printer youd have gotten a different story. Quite a bit of focus went into that while i was at university for mechanical engineering.

63hrs print time, holy smokes!
It would take 3 to mill out. Though i would skip the crosses at the bottom and just go for a couple holes.

Thats exactly why my print head sits there mostly unused.

all else aside it's cool you took the time to really look into this, I can certainly appreciate that.

Also, i'm certain you have more knowledge of home 3d printing than i do. I pretty much dismissed it for other methods when it came to my hobbies. I'm sorry if gave you the impression that i'm the expert and you don't know. I just made observations based on my own experience.
