After reading a few posts, a thought occurred to me. When in the battle of trying to paint something and getting frustrated that it is not exactly like the reference picture do this. Break the painting down to its simplest elements and not a whole. Color, shapes, light and shadow. Relating each element in its simplest form releases you from the bind of photo realism and allows you to paint more free in terms of shapes and color. Almost abstract. I will guarantee you when you step back and look again at your work in totality you will be surprised any what you have accomplished.

Great advice. Sometimes if you take your painting and reference and turn it sideways or even upside down and then paint the simplest elements. You then paint what you see, not what you know.

i love thinking in the terms of: "draw it how it is, not what you THINK it should look like."

My art teacher in Highschool said that the logical side of the brain, fights the creative side of your brain. But if you are being REALLY creative drawing your own name, that it would be possible to misspell it!! Because you wouldn't be using the logical side of your brain.

This was probably the single best piece of artistic advice I read on this forum when I first started. I thought I knew what an eye looked like until I tried to paint one without a reference......... Boy what an eye opener that was...(pun intended)
I find it incredibly difficult making a convincing drawing or painting with no reference pictures. I give props to people like Rod Fuchs that pump out these incredible detailed dragons and skeletons.
