looking at hobby lobby their crescent board selection goes something like this
crescent collage board
crescent perfect mount mounting board
white Crescent Melton Mounting board
which one should i get?

Hot pressed and get the smoothest one they have - I often use crescent 215 hot pressed.

I haven't used crescent, but you need to use hot pressed board. I'm guessing, but I don't know for sure, that these may be too absorbent. I have tried other mounting board, and found it didn't have any more benefit than regular paper - but that might be just the type I tried.

HL has the 215. It's Hot pressed bright white. It might be called art board or illustration board, the descriptions you gave don't quite sound right. It's medium weight. It comes as 15x20 inch size in their store. $4.99 as I recall. I can stop by there tomorrow and get you the exact item stock number and description. 215.3 is Crescents stock number for that size.

cool that would be great- I am hoping to store these in the Itoya portfolios once they are dry

You want Crescent 205.3, 205.6 or 205. The 215 is cold press marker board. Last I was at Hobby Lobby they didn't have any hot press.

This is where i've gotten my info. Your right it's called marker board but they indicate it is hot press.
The 110 and 310 series are cold press but they say for airbrush/wash/illustration

Yes that is the Medium weight board and right next to it is the 205.3 heavy weight. I prefer the heavyweight board. In the descriptions above the marker board description is the Illustration board Description. I am not sure if there is a big difference between the two other than the thickness. Here is the chart I was going from http://www.crescentartists.com/artboard/artboard_ill.htm

If you look at the bottom of the chart it lists the 215 as a cold press marker board. Also I believe this is a newer list of their products.

Thanks Fred,

Odd that would change. For the original poster the board is 215IP.3 Marker bd at HL.
Looks like I'll have to order a few different boards to try.

Only thing I can figure is the link you had was dated 2014 and the one I popped up I believe is the newer list. The reason I say that is the board I am working on right now is a discontinued board and doesn't show on this list. Maybe the marker board on the one you listed is also discontinued. Not sure. Once my local art store runs out of the one I have I will be ordering the 205.3 if that one still exists. [emoji23]

kind of an unrelated question but which crescent board would work best with graphite art work lol when it comes to paper I normally try to stick with the same brand that is why I ask

The only thing I did was go to the hobby lobby website and type in the word Crescent and then hit search- that is how I got the results I did

I wouldn't rely on them to get it right. I asked if they had Krylon UV resistant Gloss Varnish that I saw on their site and the worker said they don't carry that. I stopped in the store and it was right above the acrylic paints. Most likely they messed up.
