The approach

ok I feel like I don't know where to begin sometimes? I am feeling lost and overwhelmed with how to go about the initial stages or setup. I can draw and paint but when I am airbrushing I feel like I am missing something maybe I am over thinking things. I understand that there are many different ways to do things. I feel like making stencils of the image is the easiest but maybe I'm making it to complex.

A very wise man once said "Begin quickly... get better with time" Make a decision- good? bad? stupid? doesn't matter. Make it. Quickly. Flip a coin, throw your airbrush at a chart on the wall, ask a friend for a number between 1 and 10. Once you make that decision, go for it. Full throttle. Dont think, dont look back. Once you get over that initial hump, it will all slide downhill very quickly anyway ;)

OK maybe its not so bad for you... but this advice worked very well for me!

Yes, dive in, get some landmarks mapped in a go for it.
You've an art background and the airbrush is just a tool.
You'll no doubt surprise yourself :)

Think of the airbrush as your most usefull brush as it will do all you need it to you just need to learn how to do the stroke's

Just make a decision to try a method and see if it works for you, then maybe try another way next time, and you'll soon find what you feel most comfortable with.

I too am an over thinker. I find getting started hard to do, playing over and over how I should go about it. I find you just need to stop thinking and get started, ot all falls into place as you go along, and you will develop the way that suits you best.

If you already have a background in drawing and painting you'll find the airbrush is just a fantastic tool to help accomplish your goals. The key is learning this tool to get it to do exactly what you want it to do when you want to do it. That comes with practicing dots, lines, dagger strokes and blends. Look for the thread here on the forum that directs you to Daniel Powers practice methods, go to the airbrush tutor videos for beginners. We are not talking about one or two pages of practice but thousands of dots, lines, etc. Then you finally get to trying to paint an eye and then go from there. Enjoy the journey and post your work for constructive criticism.

Try really say reducing a color, get a piece drawn up or transferred and just put some tunes on, try to experience the airbrush as you would a pencil working in small little area's and expand out.Try to not stop at all if much, just keep thinking its just another drawing Maybe just relax and get into the flow a bit with some exercises like above to just loosen up 90% of our own inability at time is simply ourselves saying we can't.Say you can and just do some silly exercises and works where outcome isnt the idea, experimenting and learning a few things and feeling it a bit more..As a drawer its very, very similar the way the two work and layer, think pencil when airbrushing, approach it the same way and you may be surprised at the result. In other words find that artist within and connect to it rather than worry about the hows and whys to much, enjoy it..My bit of zen for the day.

and work a bit bigger if you work small, it helps as its easy to go big at times in comparison to small You'd be amazed how many beginners simply just try to paint to small before knowing that real control big allows.
