Painting the underside of a hood on a corvette

I was wondering what type of paint you would use to make a mural on the underside of a car hood? I need the paint to be able to withstand heat from the car engine.
My friend wants me to do a mural on the underside of the hood so that when he goes to car shows and keeps the hood up, people can see it.

Not sure of the heat limitations of wicked but you could always decant engine paint which is good up to 500F, which the hood would never get close to that.

What year corvette?
I have a few of them myself

It is not so much the paint you use but the clear coat you use to protect the paint.
But this is where an introduction would come in handy . Knowing where you live on this planet helps us make better suggestion on paint.
You can use Wicked or AirAuto if you want to stay water based or House of Kolor for urethane. But not knowing how long you have been airbrushing , or what type of work you have done makes it harder to give you a good answer.

You can find the introduction section here http://www.airbrushforum.org/introductions/

I just remembered a friend of a friend did the surrounding plastic on the new LTX based supercharged motors and used wicked. It's been roughly 2 years with no problems.

Do you prefer water based or urethane?

I live in MD and are doing this for a friend of mine. He wants me to paint the underside of his hood for car shows. I do canvas/wood paintings currently and this would be the first time doing a car. But I am a quick learner, just wanted to be sure I used the correct paint before I even attempted it. I currently use acrylic on my work.
What clear coat would you suggest to seal it and be able to withstand the heat of an engine?

Ok, where can you purchase WICKED? Also, any clear coat that you suggest that would withstand the heat of an engine?

Right now I use acrylic for my work on canvases and wood. So I am guessing water based would be better for this type of project?

I actually do not own the corvette and do not know the year. It's for a customer that reached out about the work I do on canvas.

The enging area only reaches about 195 to 200 F when it is running . Question is this vette a driver or a trailer queen?
Also is the hood fiberglass ? If so make sure not to sand through the gel coat and you can use 2k clear . It hold ups for everything else under the hood .

Clear coats depend on what equipment you have.
Do you have access to a booth or a hvlp/lvlp gun?
Or would you want something that can go threw your airbrush or simply a rattle can?

Do you have a Hobby Lobby in town ? They carry Wicked and wicked detail . Plus the New CandyO2 and the intercoat clear for it as well as the reducer.
Also print the 40% off coupon to save some money and take a lot of friends :D

Unless it's a pre 72 corvette the hood is either smc or made of plastic for 97 and later, or it could be carbon fiber if it's a zr1/z06 or aftermarket.

I would definitely get the year and if its a oem or aftermarket hood

The clear micron linked to is a good clear for a one time project if you don't have the equipment.

Once you activate the clear you basically use it all or throw the leftover out.

And if you are using two pack make sure you use the correct safety gear and do the work in a suitable environment (EG a paint booth). If you don't have one I'd recommend outsourcing the clear coat.

Yes, I believe I do have a hobby lobby in town that I can go to. Thanks for all the info and the suggestion for the coupon. This is my first car mural and I want to make sure I don't mess it up and use the right stuff.

No I do not have access to either of those things. I will have to use something that will keep the car covered during the process.
Is airbrush suggested to do a mural on the underside of the hood? Or is this something I can do by hand?

Some of the stuff he wants on there, needs to be done by brush work, not air can/airbrush unless they sell them small enough I can do thin line work.

Trust me when I say this in the right hands an airbrush can paint a hair line on a hair.
One of our members painted a skull on a grain of rice . But that all comes from practice .
Is it the older style vette that the hood opens like most car or the tilt front end style?
If you can remove the hood it will make it easier to work on and the car will be no where around it.
Also remember to tape and paper the side of the hood where you do not want any damage or over spray paint to get.

Oh and wicked can be used on the items you normally work on . It was design to basically paint on any surface . So metal , wood , plastic , textiles and even glass. but it all is about the prep work on any paint job .

whoa... I've heard about painting a pimple on a gnats behind... Ive never seen it done before! No wonder Seamonkey is so legendary on here! :)
