Schmincke aero colors question

RichardH

Detail Decepticon!
I am wanting to try the schmincke aero color ink and can get the colors in the usa from Blick.
I can't find the aero medium anywhere here and am wondering if I can use Createx or Etac or Golden base to thin it with. Their website says not to thin with water but about 20%. I have the 3 acrylic bases and don't want to buy the ink if I can't find a base to dilute it with since it a little costly for the colors.

I haven't tried any ink but the Scratchbord ink and I really like it but they don't sell individual bottles. Have to buy the whole set and I don't need all the colors taking up shelf space that I will never use. I have changed to all black and white. I just can't mix colors anymore. I spend 2 hours mixing and 15 seconds spraying.

I would try other brands if I could find enough info from others on what and how they use or mix for the thin layers.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Richard

I use their medium to change opacity, not to thin. I use water to thin. But before I had their medium, I used E'tac's transparent base or Com-art's medium. I'm sure the base from Golden would be fine. From Createx I will use the one from the Illustration line. But I think you will need to use their the Createx HP reducer as well then.

Thanks AndreZA for the info. I have the E'tac's base and also the CI ill. base. Both are large bottles. I think I will order the aero ink today and give it a try with them. I'm not sure why Blick doesn't carry their base. They carry most of the other things from Schmincke.

Thanks

I'm led to believe that Schminke don't make a medium for their aero colour but I was recommended to use their retarder which works very well with little or no tip dry, I tried 4011 reducer with it years ago but got ridiculous tip dry as a result.

Thanks Malky for the info. I just finished ordering the ink but didn't order the retarder. I'll try it out with water first and maybe Mr.Micron could send me some of his shine to try with it also. lollollol
Hope all is well on your end today. Did you get to play with the new youngun much. They are a joy to play with. My grandkids are grown and don't get to see them very much but did when they were young.

I would try the etac base as its reduced with water where the CI has to use their hp reducer.

The retarder makes it flow better and as I said it seriously reduces tip dry.

He was a little too small to play with and he slept most of the time I was there but becsuse he was so small and fragile looking I didn't dare touch him at all although I did lift his tiny hand with my finger, I think I spent most of my time just staring at him, when I saw him on Saturday he was three days old and that's is the youngest I have seen any of my grandkids in the flesh, so it was a very special day, I was also very proud if my son watching in awe as he cared for his little son, it was amazing to him do what I used to do for him.

Thanks jord001. That's good advice. I have a big bottle of it that I use with E'tac'. I'll get the ink in a few days and give it a good workout with what I have on hand.

That's good. Let him get a little older and then it is time to start spoiling. Let him hold a airbrush when a little older. Start him out young and it won't be a problem learning like us old people do.

I use schmincke and I have the aero medium, but honestly it's really thick, it would require thinning, schmincke with hp reducer you get fantastic results, I find schmincke paints aren't really picky with what you reduce them with, not like holbein or etac, both great paints but are very finicky

Well the ink came today and tomorrow will be a trial and error with the bases and thinners I have on hand. Here in the US the only place I could find the Schmincke ink was from Blick. Very costly but if it works like I want it to work then I'll be satisfied. I'll try it on Yupo first since I like that paper and see how good it will be at scratching and blending. Next would be gesso boards and clay boards. Have plenty of them to play with.
Now if I can just get my trigger finger to work good, it will be a good painting day.
I have scratchbords too. I think I like scratching more than painting. lol:eek:

It works great on clayboard. Foxy Studio are now using Aerocolour and Liquitex in their classes.

Thanks AndreZA for the comment. I like clayboard and am able to get any size they produce locally. So far I have been using 5x7 size but am getting my nerve up to go larger. I think larger would be easier to do since I am not having to be so critical of how to spray such a small area.
Liquitex is a local item also. I was thinking of getting that brand when wanting ink but couldn't find much on the forum about how it was liked or disliked. I'm sure aerocolor will work ok for me, just have to play with it a while to get the hang of it for opacity.

Thanks
Richard

I think liquitex is fantastic actually, but there is a new line of ink by talents called amsterdam, better then liquitex and cheaper, but schmincke is far superior

Well I did some testing with the Schmincke aero ink on Yupo and poster board. I found out with what I have on hand with base and thinner was that the E'tac' base and water worked great for opacity. Scratching and fiber brushing was very good and smooth.
The Createx ill. base and thinner was the worst. Tip dried very quickly and started shooting dried pieces after just a few seconds of spraying. Golden High Flow base and thinner wasn't too bad but scratching was terrible. It came off in pieces when scratched.
So that is my results from the test.
I know each person has their own way of working with ink, but this is my way of testing with my stuff on hand.
The ink with E'tac' efx base stayed tacky a long time once sqrayed on Yupo. I kinda like that since it can be worked while a little wet with some bold scratching and after letting it dry for a few hours, it scratched very good with smooth lines.
