Clayboard or Illustration board

Ok guys, I have a little project I'm getting ready to work on. Theres tons of info here on this but specifically I'm thinking to use com art on one of these two surfaces and my question is does anyone have a brand of clayboard or illustration board they like form hobby lobby or micheals?
What is the difference between Illustration board and clayboard?
Which will be easier? Which is more appropriate for framing? if one is more apropriate over the other.
The scene is a cartoon scene from peter pan
I'll need to do some minor erasing, does anyone have an eraser they like from one of those stores?

I use Illustration board prepped with a couple coats of clear vanish first and don't have a problem With erasing on it but scratching will damage it!as for Eraser's Fabber caster both hard (white) and soft (pink) are sold at both place's around here or you can get them at Staples ,you may also want to pick up an eraser pack with different eraser types i think theres a pink, white ,kneeding type in the pack?

Thanks! This is a whole new world to me so im not even sure if I would recognize clayboard or illustration board if I saw it. If its one of those things that goes by different names when you actually go to the store or what

At Hobby Lobby no. And the same for Michael’s. Order from Blick Art Materials and get Crescent 205 Hot Press Illustration Board or Ampersand Clayboard. They both can stand up to erasing and scrape. I prefer the Fabre Castel erasers pencil style.

Don’t do Cold Press Illustration because it does not tolerate scratching.

For this piece I wont be doing any scratching. Just a bit of erasing. Would any of the Gessoboard be ok? I may not be able to order this time around and Its a long drive to any real art stores.
I thought about markerboard like ive been doing some stuff on but I kind of think Illustration paints will never stick to that.

They do have some hot press Crescent IB but idk if its 205

Also some Canson Illustration art board that claims to stand up to repeated erasing and scraping

I use both the canson and the crescent I like the Canson a little better for erasing tho. are you going to erase all the way back to the board for highlights?

Yeah in one spot. but the highlight is a little grey. The whole thing has a sort of dim undertone actually.
The other spots will be more so I can come back to a highlight color to make a "clean" blend if you know what i mean.

The only real highlight is right here

I know I can do this without erasing but it seems like some soft erasing and maybe some respray would really do the trick

The cleanish blends are like in the kids' hair, which again I could do without erasing but It seems like a good way to go to get the blend to take place just right.

Does that gray core actualy have a grey appearance? I think that might actually be the ticket,
Im thinking it would even help sort of even the tone and still let the relatively dull colors have a solid cartoon feel.
The colors all look a little muddy to me

Thanks for the help you guys, I'm still very far away from a glimpse of understanding of Illustration substrates but at least for this project I think I have a direction.

Oh one more thing @basepaint or @Airbrush Dreams ,
If I got the Hot press gray core would I need to base it out with varnish like you do BP?

not if your not going all the way back to the board color but you will get some paint soaking into the board if you don't,You can use some liquid frisket on the highlights too then just rub it off when you get done and it will leave the white of the board

I have never used a grey core so I can’t advise on that. The 205 is extremely smooth and very low absorbency. That is what makes it ideal for erasing and scratching. The surface is hard enough to withstand the blade. If you want a base color use the Createx Illustration paint and let the base color cure. However if you use the blade on it it can still scratch back to the white board.

Just a quick question.
Is it easy to make your own clayboard? I’ve had a look online and there is a lot of turotials so just wondering is it worth it and has anyone on here done it?
