Silly dagger stroke question

Joe T

Mac-Valve Maestro!
been working on my dagger strokes and found something int resting. I seem to be able to do a backwards or maybe it’s called a reverse dagger stroke LOTS easier than normal dagger stroke. Going from close to the board to farther away seems to work so much better for me. Going from far to close not so much. Is this normal for new users? I know more practice but I swear it’s very uncomfortable for me. The backwards stroke seems very easy and comfortable

Look forward to all the wisdom this site holds.

Thanks folks

Joe

I have noticed that as well , Most have a better range of movement right to left (right hand dominance) then left to right using elbow bent .
Arms hanging at your side bend your elbow to 90 degrees and see that you can move them toward each other better then away . It mainly a natural motion, So making reverse daggers strokes is actually a more natural motion so it makes sense if you study it.

It sounds like you are making comet tails. Dagger strokes does not require you to change distance, only paint supply. Keep the distance the same with more paint at the beginning and close off the paint (keep air open) as you move away.

Aghhhhh I thought I read and saw different on a YouTube video. Well heck..I’ll try that then

To be fair, I've seen dagger strokes taught several different ways. Though I agree the general consensus is that dagger strokes are created with a change of flow, but not distance, I have seen arguments about changing both distance and flow simultaneously in order to maintain edge consistency through the stroke. The claim being that not moving the tip towards the paper near the end of the stroke could result in a blurry point. I think the idea has merit but don't know that its as critical in practice. I believe in Mitch's dagger stroke tutorial, for example, he says you move closer and speed up. Granted he may have a different recommendation now, given the time since he made that video.

Yeah, I saw that video also, it is the
Airbrush Effects 2 Part 2. of the airbrush effects tutorial picks up where the first effect tutorial left off by teaching you how to airbrush the dagger stroke!
under the "Tutorials" tab at the top of the page.

I am glad I found those videos, got me to order up some water based paint to start practicing the basics. Cant wait for it to get here!

Yup that’s where I saw it....right or wrong or does it matter?

If you are like me and don't know what you are doing, I have no idea. I guess I will try it both ways

If you are one of this site's "pros" then I guess it doesn't matter as long as they get it done.

no i dont think it matters what you call it, its a line that stops/starts, thickness may/maynot vary at one end.
It does at least differentiate it from a dot lol
