Man, I screwed up the registration form and this is the 5th attempt n 3rd day in a row I tried to get on here. Hope it's worth it.

Anyway if u will excuse me, I'm sure I have some questions that more experienced users will think are idiotic. Lol. I'm an electrician and have to explain real simple stuff to younger guys over n over every day. So I get your frustration. But if u could, bare with me. I have just been experimenting in my shed for about a month and would like to move on to... getting $#!+ right the first time. So few questions

(Painting t-shirts, tools, rims, a plastic utility cart) this is about the tools. Their metal obviosly. Steel i think. Have been paitnted flat black from the manufacturer.
So. Here goes...

Do u sand between clearcoats? (If yes, could explain y briefly that would be great)

Will 5-6 clearcoats make these "tools" (their like Phillips bit extensions) durable enough not to scratch off the paint? I'm using a badger a.b.gun, at like 45psi krylon paint, (I think, I'll check that)

Last silly question. Can I use like t-shirt paint on a metal surface (only because I have cool colors in t-shirt paint already) and then use a clear coat over that?...

Thanks for any help. I am bugging out at this point. T-shirts are coming out okay but I wanna move on to like helmets n car hoods and it's a different animal I guess. Also does anyone typiccly use their normal airbrush gun to shoot clear? It seems to get really hard to clean it off my stuff. Worried it's going to screw my guns up. Thanks again. full of questions today. any help is very appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! We certainly don't mind answering noob questions here so ask away. As far as your questions go... heck if I know! Lol someone will help you I'm sure. They will probably also want you to go over to the intro section if you haven't already. I just got off work so my brain's a little fried right now :)

Awesome. I will chk out the intro section. I also will be back to read whatever advice you guys can give me. Very interested in airbrushing. But I'm hitting a point where it's more frustrating then anything else. I am familiar with forums n their rules (I'm on a few for electricians that I use when I'm stuck on my job) so if I need to correct something or move it, that's fine, I understand. Thanks for the quick reply.

Well, First , you dont have to censor common curse words like excrement.....see the forum does it for you :)

No clear i know of is going to be tough enough to make paint not scratch off a tool. If its 2k clear....maybe itll last a while on a bit extension but your actually doing yourself a dis-service by going more than 3 coats really. Krylon...:) doesnt stand much chance. Good thing is you could strip and redo it every two weeks if you want.
Cerakote might work but its only flat colors too. You can probably clear it for sheen but again the clear just isnt gonna be that tough.

Between clearcoats you only need to sand if you are letting one coat go past that paints open window or if you are flowcoating, which is really only useful for getting a show finish on large panels.

When you say t-shirt paint im assuming something like standard createx......This ive not tried but Its a soft paint so i think shrinkage will be a problem if clearing over it.

I'll shoot clear through anything....clean up with lacquer thinner. Using the airbrush makes your job difficult on anything thats not small enough to fit in your hand though. Round spray patterns arent really easy to get a good clear out of except in very limited circumstances.

Your questions are really broad though, your best bet really is to ask about a specific thing your wanting to get right and let us know what you have or are willing to get...per project.

Painting t-shirts? No clear needed
tools depends on the use of the tool and what parts of the tool you paint , Clear coating will help but if it get heavy use the paint will come off
rims I can only assume auto rims, scuff, base, inter coat clear , Art work , Clear coat should hold up like the vehicles paint job
a plastic utility cart needs a adhesive promoter like BullDog but I have hard hats that are wore in the field daily some for more then ten years , Other then something that will dent or scratch the hard hat the paint and clear holds up.

Nice. I started a hard hat myself. We only use them maybe 3-4 times a year. So I got mine basecoated and the boss said, "make sure you got your hats tomorow" lol... so, need to sand it back off now n start from scratch. I could buy a new one for like 10 bucks but I got some weird attachment with this one. Had it a long time now. I think they have changed a few designs over the years and the newer ones sit way higher then the old ones. Probably some updated safety code but they seem to bump into more things overhead... and fall off a lil easier. Anyway, I'll be looking for tips on that soon.
