Stunning... So what are the "x"'s for? I'm guessing something of a landmark for a different color or just to keep your place?

Exactly, they're landmarks for a different color :) There will be some black scales scattered here and there, so I marked them to tell which ones will be black ;D

Howdy! I wanted to show the current state of this project, cause I'll have to put it on hold for a time, due to more pressing projects (which I'll be sharing here too of course) :D
So I continued working on the scales around the head which is one of the two sections in focus, thus requiring more detailed work. I added some textures by removing paint using a brush lightly soaked in reducer and also using sand paper in some areas, taking advantage of the very texture of the board. This has proved to be quite useful to make some interesting textures.
    Here's how it's currently looking :)

I've been mainly painting with various mixes of Apple green, White, Golden Yellow, Paynes Grey and Viridian. Also making some greens with Cerulean Blue and Golden Yellow.
I'll go back to this asap, after finishing another project I'll dive into in the next days :)

So... do you mask off every individual scale? Sometimes I wish I could stop by someone's house and watch them do this for an hour!

Up to this point, yes, most of the scales I've painted were masked off because this portion is in focus, so I need sharp edges... the following section (the middle) will be out of focus and blurred, so I won't have to mask anything there :)

That is excellent. Very interesting that you are finishing a scale at a time and not do the whole thing in a colour and then come with the next colour.

Actually I work a group of scales at a time, going with base colors first and then focusing on each individual scale for details :)

Hello! Life's been quite an obstacle for airbrushing lately, but I'm back at this project, so I'd like to share some progress I've made :) I painted the central section, which is supposed to look blurred, so I kept my distance with the airbrush and tried to give it an out-of-focus look by increasing the distance moderately. I lack experience with this effect, and I think it came out a bit messy. I'll have to practice to improve in this field.

Next I painted the other portion that's out of focus. In the reference, the upper section has interesting tones, due to the light hitting the scales at an angle and producing certain white reflections, all of this blurred. I tried to reproduce this effect as best as I could, but again, I definitely need to improve.

Currently, I'm working on the last portion, which is in-focus, just like the head. I left this for the end so that the border scales overlap those in the background. I'm painting with base greens and adding textures by removing paint.

That's the current state of this project. I'll try to finish it in the next few days, then I'll come back with a final update :)

Really glad you're back on this, looking forward to seeing it finished. Its a cracker!

I have trouble with out of focus stuff too, though yours looks good to me. I either over work it, or think it looks untidy and amateurish. Yours doesn't look like that at all.
