Horrible white

Hi I was just wondering if any body has a good colour mixing theory to be able to lighten colours without having to add White. I hate adding White to colours as it always seems to make the colour milky?
Any suggestions

add the next color up from the color you want to lighten, for instance, red add yellow orange, green add yellow, if you want to darken it, add it compliment or for red add white to tint it and yellow orange to brighten it back up
