So for a recap, mix 40% 4030 with 10% 4012 then add 50% candy(I take you can tweek this to make it more/less trans). Gotta bottle going a try it.

I forgot all about the paint freeze having lived in the subtropics for many years now.

I remember in one of the vids that Fraser recommends you create the slurry first.. 4012/4030 and let that melt in for up to 10 min.

That sounds familiar. Was that for paint, or for candy? I think that was for Wicked.

I found that adding Reducer after the Candy caused me problems. It worked better for me to create the 4030 and Reducer Slurry first, then add the Candy. Adding further reducer from there was fine, I had no issues.
This is not to say that it’s the only way of doing it, just reporting my findings.

Here to add another monkey wrench in the mix. The bottles I used in the original first post! I tried again yesterday and guess what...no seeding! Yea, explain that one. I thInk it may have been the temperature that day or something dunno, will try again today and see if it still works. So confusing

That is how I mix the candy....has not failed me.....
and some of the older vids have changed to newer findings....there is still some that tell you to use 4030 over candy as a bleed check....wrong now
it says in the above to mix candy and 4030, then reduce

Ok, I see that is what Createx is saying is proper procedure.

But for meeeeeeeee.. I wanna know the slurry isn't gonna go bad before adding any liquid gold..aka candy.

Also, does anyone feel the 4030 tends to add texture to dried candy layers? Kinda ends up in a 400-600 grit sand paper finish.

I think that texture happens with just about any paint or medium, I saw some guy on a YouTube video discussing this and recommended going over the work with scotchbrite every few layers, I would be afraid to try that in fear of losing a layer of two and ruining my work:eek:

So I was reminded by another thread to check my in stock 4030.. It has ALL went bad since I updated this thread.. well except the new stuff they sent me. And I never noticed just how much clearer the new 4030 is than the old 4030. I think they might have realized it's a unstable product and have changed formulas. 20180708_201145.jpg 20180708_201530.jpg

I think they must have had issues with it, but have improved the mix.
When it was first released it was call “Intercoat” and was supposed to be used with Candy20 to prevent one layer bleeding into another. It didn’t work, so it was renamed “Balancing Clear” and sold as a mix additive as we know it now.
The newest bottle I have is very different to the first one I got, so hopefully they have now figured out the formula.

Ok it must be the heat then. My art room sits on the west side of my house and gets a full blast from the sun later in the day.

4030 is the most unstable of any additive or paint I have.

    .
I think I saw video talking about how it started as an inter coat but realized it helped with flow, etc.
I’m curious as to why you suspect a formula change?

Well when one bottle is milky white and the newest stuff is almost clear.. I would say there was a change.

It’s purely speculation on my part and wasn’t meant to sound like a statement of fact, sorry if it did. But the older bottle I had was a different colour and so much thicker than the newer ones. It had Intercoat Clear on the bottle and I think the newer ones have Balancing Clear. Obviously the label has nothing to do with the formula, but I think I remember hearing something about a tweak to the formula on the Coast Airbrush live at 5, but I can’t say for sure.
I’ve ended up with 2 120ml bottles and a 60ml bottle, all are newer and seem to be a lot more stable. The ball moves very freely in the bottle which my original bottle didn’t.

Does this color difference exist in new bottles? Or the result of damage?

I remember shipping concerns in the winter because of freezing. I didn’t know direct sunlight could affect it. But that would explain the frosted plastic on 4030. Like brown beer bottles. I know I won’t be leaving the cap open on mine after reading about the air exposure.
