OK so time for this project, it has ruminated in my head for long enough. This is my mocha pot I use for making coffee when riding or kayaking. Durable, reliable and makes good coffee... OK a little heavy but weight in the kayak isn't my primary consideration... :)

This is going to be a little bit of a mixed media. I'll use golden high flow paints and my micron. I'm painting on Crescent 215 hot pressed board, about A5 size.

I transferred the image with some graphite paper, simple enough, then using a permanent 0.2mm marker I filled in the fine details with the very dark. The object is to recreate the image, so I'm using different tools to achieve that in the same manner we use scalpels and erasers.

Then the frisk film... nice hard edge around the pot. I cut out the handle and the top lid know as they are going to be really dark, I'll get them to about 90% then demask the rest of the pot.

So I mixed a paynes grey and started adding the dark areas of the lid and the handle. Then added more black to the mix and added a couple of highlights,. They are subtle in the reference but definitely there.

There are some defined hard edges so I use a card as a straight line template.

Comparing the reference and the picture, I need to go a lot darker...

Its coming along well Mark, lots of little subtleties in the details that are hard to see until you zoom in. Its a lot more technical than it looks (well for me anyway) Thanks for sharing and doing the sbs.

Cool piece Mark! And a nice SBS too, it’s all looking great so far. Mixing techniques and tools is great. There’s a guy I watch on YouTube who uses gel pens alongside his airbrush all the time as he prefers the detail he can get by mixing tools like that. Looking forward to the rest of his piece.

Yes, this one rattled around for a long time till I worked out how I was going to approach it.

Yes, speed is good as well! I thought at first the pen was too dark but looking at the photo's I think I'm good with it now!

You and I both like their coffee. I like the subjects you choose to paint also. This one is going great.

I like your step by step describing.

Could this guy be my butty? Mouth of Madness? He uses jelly pens for lights and darks and I like the effect it gives him.

Yes Tuffnutz, it is. I’m a big fan of Adam’s work and I think he uses gel pens to great effect.

I tried a little last night but it was too cold and taking forever for the paint to harden enough to work and not damage the substrate. I cut a stencil for the relief valve and put down some transparent and put a couple of coats on. So after about 10 minutes I gave up... then started again tonight. I put some more details around the relief valve then started some of the textures using a stencil. The FX set.

A little more done and finished. I used a black pencil to get in some sharp lines, a little more erasing then I put some transpatent brown oxide to bring out the "hot metal" type sheen.
