Lovely painting, the eyes look so crisp and the feathers so soft. Thanks for sharing with us.

Very beautiful! Did you use your pencils for the foundation layer? That's what Malky likes to do. :)

You nailed it. Feathers look both organized and chaotic, very natural and realistic. Really nice work.

thanks a lot guys, u are very kind.

I used them to draw some hairs and other little textures but I must try that method, too!

Ill try to explain with my limited english (sorry)

After transfering proportions, I like to start from greys/umbers/sepia and work on the darkest parts. I find easier to work from here where I already have a global vision and mistakes are easy to be corrected. I protect the eye shine with a little piece of frisket or liquid mask.

    IMG_2893.JPG
I don't usually try to paint every single little pixel from the refference. Sometimes I introduce new elements or change things I dont like. Maybe it wont be a perfect copy of it but I feel I leave more of myself in the painting and I find it a funnier and less mechanical process. (or maybe Im wrong and in the next work I change my mind, who knows)

    2.JPG

I used a total of 6 mixed tones (2 of them for the eyes) and black.
I build it up erasing light paint layers and adding contrast.
I used a blade, different erasers and a fiberglass pen. Also, watercolor pencils to draw some lines and little textures.

    3.JPG

After darkening the background and filling the eyes the look changes a lot. I usually paint eyes first but this time I wanted to leave the eyes for the end...... I couldnt resist the temptation.

    4.JPG

The total process took around 22 hours, most of them working in the head.

and a better picture of the final result:
