I came across a video of Steve Driscoll doing a painting of Frank Sinatra where he gives his recipe for the color he used for that particular portrait.

Thought this info may interest some.

I have his skin tone set by Wicked, but this one looked like a better starting point for certain projects.

    image.jpeg

    200 ochre
    50 bright red
    5 smoke
    6 moss green
    17 white

Damn that is a lot of paint. I don't thinks I've used that amount of paint on ALL my paintings.

If you subscribe to Dru Blair's newsletter you can get his method for skin tones.

I enrolled in Dru Blair's color portrait workshop in July. I'm looking forward to learning more about color theory when I'm there.

Steves method and Dru's are very different. Steve is more like Marissa, as in an under painting then transparants layed on top.

White+burnt sienna/ umber gets you in the ballpark, red violet and sepia tune it in

I found the quantities of each color interesting. I have struggled with overshooting my target colors. Even using a toothpick to add colors in my paint cup was too much of that certain color at times. This helped me put into perspective how little it takes to change a color.

Color is very foreign to me. The extent of my art career has been mainly doodles with a #2 pencil. I have a basic understanding of how a color wheel works, but clueless as to what portions to use. Dru's last newsletter was vague on this & im sure taking his class will help me a lot.

Well we have seen just how much it has helped Musicmacd. Mt problem is being red/green color blind so matching is a real pain.

Dang I bet. I guess I don't have any excuses... Musicmacd definitely has some artistic talent. I'm not sure how much I have, but I'm willing to try.

I have a book with 1500 recipes for all different colors with both oils and acrylic but most of the time I can judge pretty close

In the video on Frank Sinatra, Steve used what looked like paint color sample cards he had made, with recipes for achieving each tone. That must be a time saver for tricky colors.
