    Hey Guys and Girls,
I’ve been working on this one for a little bit and thought I’d add some progress pictures, that way if it goes wrong, you guys can tell me what I did LOL.
Being a Newb I always appreciate seeing the different stages too, so I’m sure others will too.
I saw this piece on a Ryan Townsend video (don’t worry, no Red / Pink is required just yet), and I thought I’d try to simplify it and give it a go.
It has a very Automotive feel as it’s kind of lifelike, but with over the top shadows and highlights.
Here is the reference for the skull:
There’s no surprises with how I went about this.
First I fogged in some Wicked White then mapped out the basic foundation using a stencil I made for the skull.
Then I started to build the image with Wicked White, just going slow trying to copy the reference as close as I can.
I had some problems that slowed me down. Every 10mins or so the White would start to clog the nozzle making the brush go Single Action. I had strained the paint, it was pretty heavily reduced and the brush was clean when I started. I figured that there could be something that my Micron didn’t like about that particular bottle of Wicked White. Bottom line I switched to CI White and haven’t had any problem since.
Anyhow, eventually finished the White and mixed up some CI Black with a little Trans Base and reduced a fair bit.
Then I’ve just continued the shading, trying not to go too fast or start ignoring my reference. I’ve really tried to be aware of contrast on this one as I wanted to get as much depth as I can.
This is where I’ve gotten to so far.
Next step will be to add some more highlights, the. I’m going to clear over it before attempting the Fire. That way if (when lol) I screw up the fire, I’ll be able to wipe it all away without damaging the Skull bellow.
    That’s the plan anyhow.
    Thanks for looking,
Critique is always welcome and appreciated.

I like the pose of that skull very much Simon, and I think you doing good job on it.
If you like my few pence clue, I'd rather avoid making the solid lines around the edges - the teeth for example...
I love the shadows inside the mouth, I think they're looking very good, making me believe there's 3 dimension like ;)
    Very good !

Thanks Pog. I think you’re right about the teeth. I looked at the reference and I think I mistook a light shadow between them for a solid line.
I was surprised to find some outlines on the reference, like the jaw bone for example.
Usually I’ve tried to avoid outlines but could see them in here, I guess it’s to enhance the painting for when there Candy fire on top.
But I absolutely agree with you about the teeth.
    Thanks for the help.

nice start @SiRoxx . Don't worry about those lines in the teeth. I sometimes do the same thing but managed (a few times) to eliminate them by creating various textures (unless you're going for precise copy) ;).
Man, you've allready created some fine 3D effect inside that mouth! Practice, practice, practice... That's what the pro's are saying and they're right! you'll nail it, you've proven that!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Nailing it! There are definitely outlines in the reference in some places (even in the teeth just not all of them), but i dont think it was intended to be realism so no big deal. I think you added the top outlines in the lower left teeth which gave you a little bit stenciled look rather than the semi-real cartoony automotive thing they have going on...anyways.
CI is def way better to work with than wicked in a detail brush IMO especially white.
Cant wait to see the flames...you've been doing some really fantastic work lately !

This is looking sharp so far, The lines will disappear as you work the skull and push and pull the effect of the skull and flames,Just don't keep going over the lines that are there use shadows and high lights to define the edges as you work the piece

Cheers Robby, you’re right in that it’s not intended to be too real and also right that I could have handled the teeth differently. I already have a plan of how to approach that for the next one, so thanks Buddy.

Thanks BP, I have a few more shadows to add, so I’ll try to blend them out a bit. Hopefully the Fire will knock them back a little.

I just meant I think most of them are almost the same as the ref.....just the top edge of the lower left on like 3 teeth is the only place i see an outline that wasnt there. Still killing it though.... I mean I think yours might actually come out a little better than the ref....sems more vibrant , could be the camera or just your style...idk but its sweet

Sure, I got that and was just thinking about the next one lol. I junk the vibrant part is probably the photo, but until that’s proven... I’ll take it! LOL.

Thanks Dude! I really appreciate that. I’m hoping not to ruin it with the Candy flames. But no guts no glory right. :D

So after family Vacation and some time away with work, I’ve been able to finish this piece.
I’m not happy with the flames at all, but I’m pleased with how the skull turned out.
I get some of the problems with the flames, they’re too uniform, too much use of the stencil and I did too much per layer, so they pretty much cover each other up. But I’m wondering if I also should have used a more transparent yellow when mapping them out?
I guess that’ll be something to think of for the next try.
It’s still the best skull I’ve done so far and I’m really chuffed with that.
    Anyhow, here’s the final result.
    Paint used was:
    Illustration White
    Illustration Black
    Wicked Yellow
Candy2o Blood Red, Grabber Orange, Tequila Yellow.
    Terraslate Paper.
