Tone it down a little

I have a question about what to use under my color, or to mix with, to tone them down a bit. Apparently they are a bit to vibrant for my MFA program. I have been comparing airbrush colors to oil colors and the oils are definitely not a vibrant. I am thinking a grey or burnt umber under painting but am curious about mixing also.

Mix them with a color that is opposite to it on the color wheel and it will mute the color
