I don't know if this portrait should be in SBS or work in progress. The project is completed so I am putting it in SBS, although I cannot compete with others on this site with their fantastic technique tutorials. I will try and tell you what was going through my mind during each step and maybe that will count for something??

I have always heard that drawing or painting human hands is very difficult. The reference I chose has hands almost as a focal point. I assumed that this project would end up in the trash so I did not take a lot of photos while painting the hands.

Hands about 80% complete, I think I will take a chance and move forward and work on the face. When I look at what I am doing too the face at this stage and I think to myself, “What an idiot, you can't paint portraits, throw your airbrush away and go and paint houses or something” Well, keep working and maybe I will learn something that will help in the future.

I put in his eyes, a little more detail on his forehead. Let's start his beard. Maybe, when he is complete, I can hang him in a poorly lit room, and he might not look so bad.

O.K. The beard and face are now 80% done. I will have to come back and work on giving his beard some depth, and shadows on his face to show which direction the light is coming from.

I guess I'll start on his knitted cap. There is a great SBS elsewhere on the forum on how to do “wool”

Hey! His cap is done. I might have to hang this portrait in a room with a little more light so people can see the work and detail in the cap.

Let's start on that sweater and see what all that contrast and color is going to do to my skin tones and values.

Yep. The face and hands are way too light. It is tempting to go in right now and darken everything but I haven't even painted the background, which is almost black. If I darken everything now, I may have to do it allover again when I do the background.

Well the portrait is done. I have fine tuned a lot of areas, put in those shadows and got a pretty nice rendering of where the light source is coming from.

Am I totally happy with this portrait? Well I am not going to scrap it, but I was hoping it would be more photo realistic and not look so painted.

Should the lines that define the fingers of the hand be sharper? Or would that give it a coloring book effect?

Should I have put some type of transparent wash over all the skin (face and hands) and how do I go about doing that??

Suggestions apreciated and does this style of SBS have any merit?

    Thanks

That looks pretty good as an SBS! Only other detail we normally ask is size, paint and substrate - simply because we are nosey and we know different combo's work together for different things. The result is brilliant. What method did you use to get the textures?

I'm sorry, painting is 17"x 25", Createx Illustration paint, Iwata CM-sb, Blair synthetic paper. Textures were done using electric erasure/blade

Beautiful work, I like the way you have stayed away from the 'scratched' look you see so often with synthetic paper, very nice indeed and great colours.
