after a minute of good pressure and volume my Iwata slows to almost nothing. If I shake up the paint it returns to normal then repeats. Thinning the paint simplt gives me thin paint.

Why because that may have told us what iwata you are using , What compressor you are using and what paint you are using.
Right now all I can say is sound like tip dry . But if you are running a tankless compressor and your paint is not reduce right then the same thing can happen ..

Also could be air leaking in at the packing bearing. Air pulls in and begins to thicken the paint changing the pressure as the paint dries inside the nozzle and will completely clot and stop.

Also what paint are you using and are you straining it?

I use Vallejo air and Vallejo black primer but I’m not straining it. I add reducer and try to keep it very thin. I dont know where to set needle but I dont see evidence of clogging. Maybe I’m mixing it wrong?
