A couple of Holbeins

Mac-Valve Maestro!
Here are the two Holbein brushes I picked up recently along with the EFBEs. A Y3 Hohmi and a Y-300, both Dash variants. Overall condition is excellent. Needles and nozzles are perfect.

The Y-3 is a used brush, although very clean there was a trace if paint in the needle packing fibres and marks on the base of the nozzle from repeated removal.

Although the chrome on these brushes isn’t as nice as the likes of Iwata I was pleasantly surprised by how nice they look. I adore the pearl gold handles. They look more pearlescent in real life than in the photos.

The foam was absent from the Y-3 box. Probably rotted away, as there was tarnish on both brushes from foam rot which needed sorting. My wife’s EVA yoga block fixed the problem with the box.

The foam was still present in the Y-300 box, but was badly rotted, it smelled chemically and was crumbly to the touch. Some polyurethane foams break down and release adipic acid usually after a couple of decades.

My wife hid her second yoga block from me so the box is currently empty.

The brush itself is unused. I don’t usually go for siphon brushes but I’m pleased I did this time. It has a branded Holbein bottle, which seems to match the image on the box, though the brush does not, the one on the box looks more like a Badger to me, whereas the Y-300 looks very much Holbein’s unique design.

Holbeins don’t come up that often it seems but I’m still surprised they aren’t (seemingly) more sought after because they are interesting brushes, not one part is copied exactly from iwata, everything, even the chucking nut shape, is a little special, and apparently they spray nicely. I’ve not been able to try them out just yet. They sure look pretty though.

Hello,
Very nice scores! Love that Y-300.
I'm out of town but a quick search from the engraved patent information I found it was granted in Japan for a "mist pen apparatus", submitted in 1967 and granted in 1973 with expiration of 12 years (1985). So we can safely say it was built after august 1973.

Can't find the original document yet. Seems it is no longer available.

Thanks,
Ismael

Hi Ismael, and thanks. Good job finding those patents, I wasn’t sure where to find them. The patent goes back further than I imagined. Post 1973 makes sense, from the history of the previous owner these were most likely manufactured around the 70s/80s it seems.

Found the PDF. The images show a side feed so I guess it is for the overall design.

That’s really cool. Can you point me to the PDF? I’ll see if google can translate it. It may be very interesting as there is little documentation about these brushes it seems, only a couple of adverts. Thanks for looking up the patent!

Nice score(s)!

It took me a while of trying before I found a Holbein in good working condition. I picked up several that looked good, but were toast in the needle/nozzle department - to the point I thought rumors of good performance I had heard were false. I finally scored on a Y-2 Dash, and saw the light. Interesting brushes, as they certainly marched to the beat of their own drum. Only brush I have ever seen from Japan that didn't come out of Fuso Seiki.

Here's one to go with the patent drawing - Model called Neo Hohmi (non-Dash head). The patent drawing shows the "Dash", or adjustable head.

An interesting observation on my part - I have talked about how much the Olympos/Iwata Micron head seems to be directly influenced by a a Wold A-2 head (the actual similarities are undeniable)... Well, the color cup on this brush is dead ringer for a Wold color cup down to the diameter of the feed stem.

Wow, those are pretty cool.

I read your Turbo AB thread and the frustration of not seeing many for sale in Europe, I feel the same way about EFBEs and Holbeins.

I'm hesitant to sell a Turbo because I'm afraid the buyer wouldn't understand the brush. I currently have a pile of spare parts on the way to back up the 80, so I don't need the earlier 41. I actually prefer the 41 over the 80 in terms of coolness, but for practical purposes the newer brush with new parts makes sense to be the keeper.

Just a thought for the future if you can't find one, I'd be willing to send one in trade for something of similar value that we don't see often over here. I'm still new here so I want to give it time to settle in but down the road, if you're still Turboless and I'm convinced I'll never need it...

Thanks, and yes that sounds a good idea. I almost bought one from the US recently but it went for too much once I factored in delivery and taxes. Turbos are obviously very popular at the moment. Anything else you’re looking out for other than an EFBE or Holbein? I actually have a different third Holbein on order from another source not yet arrived, though it probably wont be in as good condition. I’m also interested in acquiring a Paasche MS at some point. Very unlikely to come up in the UK.

I think I watched the Turbo market crash this past week. There were two that jumped from a reasonable $50 and $150 to nearly $600 each in the last minute of the auctions which were followed by a small flood of a about 6 or 7 I think. There were two NOS that started at nearly $700 and in real time they were 'privately offering' price drops as low as $500. One was every few hours a new offer came through. I was considering to offer him $400 but it sold.

The others all went around $200 or lower. One is currently priced at $200 with no bids and it almost over.

The crazy price wave was what prompted me to drag mine out, then drop $200 on parts since Paasche is putting the squeeze on with their remaining parts.

Here's the one I mentioned. By the photos, it looks like the only issue I see is a bent air tube adjust screw. Paasche still has this style in stock. https://www.ebay.com/itm/266700484623

I have a Paasche VL from 41, but no MS. A few early single actions of theirs, Binks Wrens and T&C Model As.

Besides EFBE or Holbein, I have no idea, I'm realitively new to the vintage market. Besides the Turbo I bought about 10 years ago, I've been using only Iwata and my original HP-BC2 for over 30 years as my only brush.

Between Creos, H&S, Iwata I'm pretty much covered, the Aerograph, T&Cs, Olympos, Paasches, Binks are curiosities to me, just like an EFBE or Holbein would be. Cool to have, not necessary, so I'm really open to suggestions.

One thing I wanted to grab was a Wold, but that'll be easier for me over here.

Turbo’s are going for crazy amounts. Still would love to have one though, just can’t justify the price.
