A couple of Holbeins

I think I watched the Turbo market crash this past week. There were two that jumped from a reasonable $50 and $150 to nearly $600 each in the last minute of the auctions which were followed by a small flood of a about 6 or 7 I think. There were two NOS that started at nearly $700 and in real time they were 'privately offering' price drops as low as $500. One was every few hours a new offer came through. I was considering to offer him $400 but it sold.

The others all went around $200 or lower. One is currently priced at $200 with no bids and it almost over.

The crazy price wave was what prompted me to drag mine out, then drop $200 on parts since Paasche is putting the squeeze on with their remaining parts.

Here's the one I mentioned. By the photos, it looks like the only issue I see is a bent air tube adjust screw. Paasche still has this style in stock. https://www.ebay.com/itm/266700484623

I have a Paasche VL from 41, but no MS. A few early single actions of theirs, Binks Wrens and T&C Model As.

Besides EFBE or Holbein, I have no idea, I'm realitively new to the vintage market. Besides the Turbo I bought about 10 years ago, I've been using only Iwata and my original HP-BC2 for over 30 years as my only brush.

Between Creos, H&S, Iwata I'm pretty much covered, the Aerograph, T&Cs, Olympos, Paasches, Binks are curiosities to me, just like an EFBE or Holbein would be. Cool to have, not necessary, so I'm really open to suggestions.

One thing I wanted to grab was a Wold, but that'll be easier for me over here.
I can understand why you’re interested in a Wold. I hope to get one or two also. They never ever come up here. I see many I like the look of in the US. Long term I hope to just buy one or two very good examples if I can. Shipping and taxes and other barriers (that Turbo you link to above won’t even accept a bid from the UK) really spoil some of the fun, whether trying to acquire from the US or Europe. There are so many cool and interesting brushes out there.

I got this diagnosis AAD when I met DaveG 😁
hey, I resemble that remark lol

you guys in Europe can always ask me to help from this side. I don't mind placing bids or shipping, as long as you understand the costs ahead of time. A single brush, maybe one with case, one without can probably be shipped for under $20US as long as you don't mind waiting for a little while. The last one I shipped 1st class like that still made it in about a week, but it was much cheaper than priority @$36.00 - it just has to be under a certain weight.

Dave, thank you for your help and support!
I also still use intermediary firms for delivery. If for some reason the shop can't send the goods to my country, I order the goods to the warehouse of the intermediary in the same country where the goods are located. They deliver easily.

Don’t listen to him Mitya, he’s just trying to make sure you get your next fix. Every time we try to leave this world behind they pull us back in with their help and support! The other week after I bought my Burdick, it didn’t work as it had no valve and after the initial hit wore off I saw my chance, I was going to go straight, I knew what I needed to do, I plucked up the courage and deleted the eBay app off my phone….but the very next morning @Kingpin sends me a valve to fit my Burdick in the post, and later that day the eBay app just magically reappeared on my phone. Explain that?!

A week later @RK Ink and Focus sends me not just a valve but a whole airbrush in the post. Meanwhile @DaveG and @tatocorvette are giving me detailed photos and explanations of how to get my Grafo working and how to photograph my brushes better to help spread the addiction to others. And how do you think I found out about Holbeins in the first place?! Type “Holbein airbrush photo” into google and guess whose name comes up! They’re a bunch of dealers Mitya, sucking us in and making sure we get our next hit and remain AAD addicts. It’s probably too late, you and I are just a Richpen Phoenix away from a lifetime of addiction.

Wiz, I have no idea how we're gonna get out of here. I knew it was a big cartel, but I didn't realise it was so big. Escape won't help. I think a rule of thumb might help: If you can't beat something, glorify it!

Fun Fact, the original name for the forum was "The Hotel California" 😂

They are gorgeous. I love old airbrushes. Thank you for sharing. Very nice photo work.
Thanks! I followed @tatocorvette ’s guide and used a photo light box of my daughters which just plugs into a usb port to power the light and makes it super quick and easy. She is getting into photography but I am a total amateur and just used my phone camera and pointed and clicked, no adjusting or editing and they look a hundred times better than what I managed before following Ismael’s advice.

The Y-2 has arrived, it took less time than I thought, with a strong smell of solvent, but in fairly good condition. Both the needle and nozzle appear to be in good condition. I have tried it without disassembling it and cleaning it first (I couldn't stand it) and it works reasonably well. I liked how comfortable it is. Tomorrow I will give it a good thorough cleaning and have it take its place on the shelf with her brother.

Looks great, what a cool looking shape to that cup. It’s just got so much unique style. Good news about the nozzle and needle condition too!

So I recently managed to put some paint through one of these two. The Y3. Not got round to the Y300 yet. Soon.
Here is my play with the Y3.

I really like this brush. I think it will take a bit of getting used to, a lot of air comes through the brush when the head is turned to allow it. You can obviously dial it down. When you do so you can get some really nice spattering effects, with a lot of control and consistency. It's really cool. In the rights hands I bet you could do good stuff.

The needle cap is not as tight as I want it to be, it sometimes loosens by accident when you adjust the dash cap. The lid on the cup doesn't fit either and that's another thing I need to sort out, but those two things can surely be resolved. It's a really great brush.

I also just realised I forgot to post the translations of the patent record @tatocorvette kindly found for me. Here it is:

They are pretty cool brushes, right?! They are just kind of different than anything else. Took me a while before I got one that worked well, but boy am I glad i stuck it out trying to find one. I enjoy working with them.
