Hi everyone. I am new to this hobby and to be honest clueless. The reason I am trying this is because I build motorbikes and one of the things that make a motorbike stand out is the paint job. During these terrible times of lockdown, I thought I would have a bash at doing it myself. I am waiting for the compressor and air gun to be delivered so not only do I not have the gear I also have no idea. I have a question which will be one of many no doubt and that is acrylic paints. to airbrush a design on a petrol tank lets say, where would be the best place to buy the paint? ive had a look on line but the paint only seems to come in small quantities like for model painting for instance. if I require a larger amount where would I have to start my search?

Welcome from New Zealand. Yes, more info needed... Are you in Nebraska or Namibia...?

First things first as well. What other gear do you have? Be prepared to put in some solid hours. This is a steep learning curve... make sure you have realistic expectations. You will see many excellent artists here doing some amazing work, that is largely the result of time and application... :) It's fun but not fast!

Hi Draclee, there’s a few more details we’ll need to be able to help fully as the others have said. But basically the smaller bottles are usually reserved for paint that only gets used in small amounts, so something like painting an image over a base coat. The base colours can be bought in larger amounts.

Thankyou for your replies, I live in Scarborough england, I have been watching lots of you tube tutorials and it has got me hooked I have to admit. I realise that this will be a step learning curve and I am prepared to put the hours in. I'm in no rush as after all it's a hobby not a job. The equipment that I an having delivered is a compressor an airline,a gun, a regulator ,gun stand and service kit. I have started to get materials such as hobby knives, masking tape and cleaner .I thought about starting off with ghost flames but I will practice on an old tank I have before attempting the bike I'm building at the moment .

Welcome from Australia.
You mention you are waiting for a gun... ‘guns’ are normally spray guns that are designed for laying down primers/base coats/base colours.
Most automotive paints are available in larger bottles, you just need to know where to look
Chances are you will be required to use non urethane paint by your local authorities due to health concerns.

If you are awaiting for an air ‘brush’ then you wont need large bottles of paint, a little goes a long way.
What brush / gun have you got coming. ?

Hi dragon hunter, sorry I meant airbrush, the airbrush that is coming is called a harder and steenbeck evolution. Its will take a while to arrive I'd imagine because of this pandemic ,so in the meantime I am rubbing the tank down ready for the base coat which is the original colour of red. I dont want to go to mad with the first attempt that's why I thought I'd go for the ghost flames as it looked straight forward enough ( famous last words )

Ahh, a fellow Brit.
Ok, as far as paint goes Createx do several lines of acrylic waterbased paint. The Createx Colours line is intended for for T Shirts, Createx AutoAir is the line that has a lot of Base colours, pearls, Metallic paints etc and are available in larger 120ml bottles, Createx Illustration is aimed more at images, fine art and stuff.
A good place to purchase would be S M Designs over in Ireland.
www.smdesigns.co.uk. Their shipping is fast and no more expensive than an other supplier.
If you want to go down the waterbased line, but fancy a different option, Inspire Paints are also available in the U.K. www.specialistpaints.com/collections/inspire-airbrush-inspire-h2o . These would be my suggestions. I’m sure some others will be posted up soon.

You're a star party boy, I will jot them links down and have a look on laptop later. A friend of mine used to do my airbrushing in Northampton but I moved up to sunny Scarborough about 18 years ago and lost touch with him. During this lock down I thought I'd have ago myself ,the price of the equipment so far hasnt even come close to what I would pay someone to do for me so I thought why not have a dabble.
