This is the project image from the course I just had in Adelaide with the help of Steve from Airbrushmegastore.com and John Seaton. I had an incredible time down there, we were in the lower level of a nice training centre there in the CBD and had a great group of people. Hopefully they each got alot out of the course, i know i did!
anyway here is a run down. i'm going to put this in picture of the month because i've never entered anything! :tired::D

    Step 1.
After extensive color mixing (i believe we mixed around 24 colors) the first step is to decide where to start the image. We had a little chat and decided that we'd start with the face, this way we wouldn't have to backmask anything after putting down the black background.
    image1.JPG

Step 2. As we add color lightly and layer upon layer we build up the textures using a variety of tools such as the blade, fibreglass eraser and 7056 perfection eraser (soft). Yupo paper doesn't take too kindly to the blade, but extremely well to fibreglass and perfection erasers so they became the tools of choice.
    image2.JPG

Step 3. Laying down the black background makes the biggest difference to the image. Before this step we see every imperfection in the face and it is easy to lose faith in the artwork but persistence is key.
    image5.JPG

Step 4. The hair was done in part with the black-red background and a few layers of sepia+red transparent. We first lay down the darkest areas and give them a bit of life by adding in some strategic small hair textures to break up the perfection created by our stencilling.
    image4.JPG

Step 5. The lips are the last element to cover the whitespace on the face and completely tie everything in. It's just crazy how we perceive the skin tones of the image before this step and once these few colors are laid down everything becomes 'tied-in'!
We mixed 4 colors for the lips, the base of the bottom, base of the top and a separate transparent for each. Blue-violet and red-violet were used for the darker line through the middle of the lips.
    image6.JPG

Step 6. The dress seems like the most technically difficult part of the image but this actually took me about an hour to complete from scratch. This is because I employed the use of a piece of scotchbrite on fresh paint! Seconds after i had watched the paint dry i then jab the scotchbrite onto the yupo paper without moving too much (more of a jabbing action) and watch as the paper falls away.
    image3.JPG

Step 7. More time is spent on trying to create the small and subtle textures around the image. You could spend hours upon hours, however with the Yupo + createx illustration combination it's quite difficult to just erase top layers of paint, which would be ideal. It's a risky process as typically one small stroke made with too much force will rip right through to the white of the paper and it's very difficult to fix once we have multiple transparents on the top layers.
    Overall i'm happy with the finished result for a course project;

awesome as always Mitch, Who else from the forum took part ?
I was really excited when I first heard that you were coming to Adelaide, and emailed my 'expression of interest' but then reality set in...
Sitting in a room with a lot of airbrush spray was never going to happen.
I have COPD which unfortunately means that I wear a mask whenever I paint, (as we all should) but if I'm having a 'bad time' then I need my powered one, which unfortunately lasts 3 hours before it needs recharging.
I would have loved to have met both Mitch the almighty and Steve from Airbrush megastore, as I've bought 90% of my equipment and supplies from him.
I may however keep your picture above and give it a go as some point if you will allow it :D
