Badger Patriot - Spray Regulator Mod

Airbrush Acquisition Disorder Patient
This tip was given to me from wmlepage on the Badger Patriot.

THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD NOT BE DONE BY ANYONE WHO DOES NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING SO.
IF DONE IMPROPERLY, DAMAGE TO THE AIRBRUSH CAN OCCUR.

The Spray Regulator has a protruding edge to protect the needle a bit, but gets in the way when trying to pick the needle clean when tip dry occurs.

Here are the tools I used to make the mod to file down and polish the front face of the spray regulator.

- Badger Patriot
- File
- Wood Board
- Wet Sand Paper 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 grits
- Red Jewelers Rouge
- Rag
- Water

- Remove the Needle, Spray Regulator, Head, and Nozzle.
- Put a small bit of cotton in the spray regulator, this will avoid any metal shaving from getting into the airbrush during the procedure.

- Replace the Head and Spray Regulator ONLY - The needle and nozzle MUST be left out while filing and sanding or they will be destroyed!
- Start using the file and hold the airbrush like the picture below.
- A few strokes at a time, gently move it across the file while keeping the airbrush perpendicular to the surface. Check the depth of the rim on the spray regulator every few passes.

- Continue doing this until there is just s very slight lip remaining.
- Put a drop or two of water on the 1000 grit and gently sand back and forth, same as on the file.
- Repeat wet sanding with 1500, 2000, and 2500 grits
- Put some of the Jewelers Rogue on a rag or paper towel and polish the front face of the spray regulator.

The final piece looks factory made and the lip no longer stops you from removing dreaded tip dry.

Looks great! Better than mine. I did mine with a dremel a small file and some sand paper. Fast, rough, but it works. Did you sand it down so much you had to kind of clearance the hole again? I did. I think I'll take mine off and give the wet sand a try so I can neaten it up.

No, I left a very slight lip. I was just filing a few passes, then I would run my finger nail across it. Once there was just barely a lip left, I started wet sanding.
At that point, by the time I got done with 4 different grits, it was pretty much flush.
I wasn't going to do the procedure on my .75 setup, but I figured, why the hell not. I never have a needle cap on any of my other brushes, I wouldn't want my Patriot to feel left out. :)

Yep I was a bit too aggressive with mine. I actually got the idea from Wiki originally. Works great, cheap, life saver.
