beards and hair....

Ive always had problems when it comes to painting hair. my brother wants me to do a picture of gandalf and that for me is the worse possible picture he has a massive beard and long hair!!! and tips on getting realistic looking hair???especially white hair on a white background!!!! cheers

Most hair is not sharp dagger strokes. That is the most common misconception.
Paint the large shapes, usually some soft dagger strokes to give it some depth, then scratching/erasing to bring out highlights.
Light layers is the key, just the same with painting any illustration.
Don't think of it as painting hair, when painting anything, you are painting shapes.
