    Hi

I have not been airbrushing long just a few weeks but started out with a couple of dru blair kits. I did the eye tutorial and was pleased with reasults and then moved on to the hair which for me has been challenging. I have almost completed the last lesson which is the one with red hair. The lesson starts with establishing the dark areas using red violet and then goes on to use burn sienna to establish more hair texture. Mine has come out more yellow than red. Just wondered if someone out there has done this lesson and got the same results? did i miss something?

    regards

First off Dru would be happy to have answered this question on his site. Being I only have done the fur class in a box I really can't answer the question but it would have been nice if you would have made an introduction post first.
musicmacd might be able to answer it as well.

Hi thanks for taking the time to reply, I wasn't aware of the introductions, so will sort that out soon. I did look around for a place to ask Mr Blair the question but couldn't find one. You live and learn

Did you get the kit that came with paint, or are you using your own? If you are going toward yellow vs. red, it sounds like you are using sepia, or burnt umber rather than burnt sienna. The burnt sienna by itself should be quite red to orange-ish.

I have done the hair tutorial but it was a while ago and my memory fails me on the specifics
I didn't get the paints in the kit as I have the full colour wheel of Createx Illustration.
According to Dru's website the colours required for this class are
    All Createx Illustration colours:
    Black,
    Sepia,
    Burnt Umber,
    Scarlet,
    Cobalt Blue,
    Yellow

You've mentioned you've used burnt sienna, it has more of an orange tone than Burnt Umber so that may be your issue.

If you've merely made a typo and if you are using the correct createx Illustration colours then I suggest you make sure they haven't settled in the bottle so give them a really good stir (dont just shake the bottle) to make sure the full pigment load is throughout the bottle.

If you got the paint with the kit then I'd suggest emailing the school.

You are correct, it’s a mix of red violet and sienna, I did advise Dru so I’m not sure if it’s been updated? Doesn’t sound like it!

I'm sorry to hear that you have had a problem with the color. It sounds like the culprit is the burnt sienna. I've observed that some lots distributed have not been true to my original spec.

The temporary cure for this would be to add some red-violet or violet to the burnt umber to reduce the yellow appearance m the painting.

Also, if you could email me a copy of the yellow results, I might be able to provide further insight. dru@drublair.com

That's certainly not the color it should be, I suppose I was lucky I didn't get the paint with the kit. I have enough Illustration to last me a year or two lol

I spoke with the owner of Createx about the problem and showed him the photo He said that there was some variation ofccolor in certain lot numbers. Can you read the lot number on the bottle of Burnt Sienna
