Combatting compressor rust

Is there something i can do to prevent rust in the tank or do i just have to deal with it? is it just part of the deal of owning and using one?

I drain it after each use, but i notice the top of plug changing colors a bit. i guess its from water sitting on it while in use.

Get one with an aluminium tank. Otherwise just live with it. It will take very long before it through the metal.

There's nothing to do with that. Just take it as it is.
I tried to pour there liquid that prevents rust, but anyway the tank has rusted through in the place where legs were welded. Welded places are the weakest for the rust.
Then I brought the tank to weld the small hole, but another one appeared just immediately. So I installed stainless steel tank instead of that one I had.
Good air tanks are made with thick metal and it takes a long time for them to rust through, so don't be afraid. Though I know those crappy chinese made with thin steel which would rust much faster. But from my experience those chinese compressors for ABing have normal thickness for tank steel.
I met those 24l chinese made garage compressors that I wouldn't advise to buy to anyone.
I have 24l Fini compressor (Italy) which is over ten years old and everything is OK with it, except pressostat membrane that has failed, but for this age it's OK.

I tip my compressor toward the drain as it releases the air that way it blows out as much water as possible.

Hi,

I found that the drain hole wasn't completely draining the tank so moisture was still being left in the tank.

There's a post in the Compressor topic thread AS186 Drain Plug.

After draining it, I also now leave the drain plug out overnight.

I also do that and lift the one side opposite the drain just to help. I sometimes also let the motor run white drain is open just to help force the water out.

You can resin coated it, with regular poliester resin or with the Red Kote that is used to prevent oxidation in automotive tanks, but soner or later the rust will start to appear!! I did it with my home made compressor and it works great, of course I live in a low air humidity place but, if you want you could try it!
