Conti board as a surface?

Hi all

Quick question for you, can you airbrush straight onto Conti board, is there any special prep etc? I have Wicked paints.

In case it's called something different in other countries, it's a chip board with a plastic/thin melamine type smooth surfact covering it.

Thanks ;)

It actually does need a special plastic primer which very expensive and not available at airbrush outlets, I've had to paint it a few times in my job as painter, I'm not sure how airbrush paint will behave, but ordinary house paints (oil and water based) will peel off without the primer.

I sometimes use MDF and prime that with simple white acrylic primer from the D.I.Y shop, both are relatively cheap.

Contiboard was in fact a brand name when it was first introduced but it is commonly referred to as laminated chipboard, its the same stuff used to make kitchen units and cheap bedroom furniture, etc.. it's low porosity makes it a bugger to paint.

The prep an that will be dearer than the board. Wet and dry plastic primer then basecoat. Like madbrush said mdf but if your roughing it up mask up as its not a nice dust to inhale!

It is cheaper to buy illustration paper or use a different material. You could get a can of adhesion promoter (I like bulldog it comes in a spraycan. Also createx recomends it for use of wicked or autoair on plastics) and prep the surface. If you really need to paint this surface such as a mural in a bathroom. But if you are just looking for some thing to paint on, go get some aquabord or illustration paper you will be much happier and have less time into prep.

OK that's great, thanks guys. It's actually a home made kitchen unit in my van that I'm converting into a camper, now I have the bug, I was just thinking of a doing some cool designs on there, but it's only a temporary unit anyway, so when I make a proper one, I'll use mdf instead.

Saved me lots of money and/or frustration guys, many thanks :victorious:

You didn't say in you first post what the contiboard was for, now that you have I wouldn't use MDF in your van, in the winter it will get damp and quickly start to perish, your contiboard is better for what your doing with it.

Why not just check out the price of plastic primer before you do anything, you find out at any half decent decorators shop, don't bother asking diy shops, they are totally useless when it comes to anything specialist, and it doesn't cost anything to ask.

Whenever I have painted odd surfaces in the past I used Gesso to prime the surface- that would be for acrylic or oil paint applied with a brush- I've never tried it to ab on it. I would start there because it stuck on everything and created a nice tooth on the surface for the paint to stick to.

I know nothing about airbrush paints so it's just my stab in the dark based on what I would do. Hope you find a good solution. I'd love to know how your project turns out :)
