I picked up some of the Createx Quicksilver Chrome, and Gold Plate paints to try. I am pretty dang impressed with these two right off the bat. Now, I have not tried to replicate a show chrome (yet), but as far as laying down a decent looking metallic coat, I am happy.

Both are supposed to be applied over a high gloss surface. I did use Auto-air gloss black, but over the Stynylrez primer coat on my resin piece, I would have called it more of a semi-gloss. It looked almost exactly like nice leather. This was for the Quicksilver Chrome. The Gold is supposed to be shot over a glosss white, but I applied it right over the white Stynylrez primer, which is quite satin or flat in appearance. I sprayed both metallic colors through a.2 nozzle (HP-B) straight from the bottle without any kind of issue.

I will try some better prep work, and glossier base coats - but, will say if anyone is looking for nice metallic paint, you may consider these. These are a pair of my desk top airbrush stands that I am making for a large display I am working on assembling -

One question @DaveG . You wrote that you used autoair gloss black over the primer and on top of those the quicksilver chrome and got that metallic look. Nice so far.
In order to get that chrome look, do you have to apply the gloss black and quicksilver over a clearcoat?
Sorry if what I'm asking is stupid, but I can't just get it! :)

Nope. The label remarks imply that you spray it right from the bottle over a base of gloss black for the quicksilver chrome, and gloss white for the gold plate. No clear coat. Now, I have a clear that dries to a rel high gloss, and I am going to give that a shot on top of the black to see what happens.... will report back.

Those colours are just so vivid. I'm sure you can fool jewelers.

Dave, the gloss black should get a bit more sheen than a leather look, you may need to reduce less, or use 4011 instead. And you really need to lay it as a wetcoat. I havent tried it over a mirror polished clear but I guess I should. Im just a little dubious of the claim it will stick long term.

I sprayed the gloss black straight from the bottle - no reduction, through a .3 nozzle.

I did some more fooling around, and cast one of the Skulls from black resin, and then clear coated it with a high gloss finish. Once dry, I hit it will the Quicksilver, and it looks awesome. The Gold Plate I did over off-white resin, also clear coated before application. I added some sepia to the deeper areas and then dusted back over with Gold Plate to finish it - looks fantastic in person.

I do not know. I didn't spray it myself.
It is very expensive to try.
I also think it's not a water base when I look at the warnings. (I'm not sure)
There are a few examples in the store. they still look good.
But I have no idea what it will be like if they are in the sun or rain for a longer time.

Yesterday I was in the store.
    So have some new info.
The paint is not based on water.
The example on the counter after 2 years and a lot of touch.
A little less shine but it still looks like chrome.
A comparison photo from a test.
On the left is the Createx.

Is Gloss black necessary if you are sprying the Chrome directly on a black panel?

it depends on how shiny the black panel is. I am doing some over black resin, and I found if the resin has a high gloss finish, the results are better.

Can't you just spray a hi gloss clear over the quicksilver to get it to shine?

not really - you can clear it, and it will be as shiny as the clear, but that is not the same as the color itself laying down over a gloss surface. Quicksilver is a very fine blend of bright aluminum flake in a binder - the better the surface it lays on, the smoother the flake will lay, the shinier it will look. On a textured surface it can look almost like a dull gray, the smoother the surface, the better the reflection it will show, the brighter it looks.

I tried a quick test panel and straight on the panel surface the flames have a brushed aluminum look. I did a quick test spray of the gloss black base on the panel and the chrome shined up more mirror like. The downside is my quick black base using an airbrush was not very smooth. Now I need to researm more about laying a smooth base coat I do not think my .5 iwat will do the job well on a 6x24 panel surface. Probably need a minigun.

It needs to go on wet to get the gloss finish so the airbrush will probably struggle on bigger surfaces.
