electric eraser questions

Is an electric eraser considered an essential piece of equipment?

I've learned that erasing can be used for highlights and wondered how many of you use erasers regularly?

Are electrics better than just a pencil eraser or an art gum type or just faster?

If you never buy an eraser for erasing highlights then an electric is not needed. That said, if you only bought one eraser, I would get a fabercastel perfection, the harder white one for Ink. I personally have many erasers, I had a run for a while, and am sure I will again, of doing monochrome with eraser techniques. The major differences in eraser types is how stiff they are, what effect they can achieve because of that firmness, and an electric is the most aggressive.

Knead able eraser
White Steadtler eraser
White pencil eraser
Alvin/Steadtler eraser pad: good for easing your transfer lines
Electric eraser
Grey scotchbrite for blending
80 grit sandpaper for other effects
X acto blades , old needle, for scratching effects

These are just a few of the things that can be used for these types of effects. Basically whatever you find that gets the work done. Lp

Hello mate there are many types of erasers and electric ones have their place! Electric ones can be a bit harsh on some substrates so you have to be careful with them as they are obviously harder to control than a pencil one!
It also depends on the texture effect you are trying to create, a putty or kneadable for instance can be great for some skin textures, there are some excellent pencil ones from Faber Castel...it's what ever floats ya boat really but I would say for fine illustration work especially realism all types of eraser are a must for creating realistic textures.
I'm sure there is a thread somewhere on here all about them?
Erasers are always good to have in your arsenal mate and they are not expensive.

Not really essential, especialy at the start of the fun..get one down the track when your ready to explore erasing..GL..If you do get into erasing you will want different options for different effects as mentioned above, I don't have various tips for mine as it was just a cheapie but I also use a hard pencil end eraser and a standart derwent eraser and the next time I'm in an artshop plan to grab some putty erasers for really soft blending so in reality the electric eraser is just one of the erasing tools you can use and then there is scratching also that in essence is erasing so some tools will be needed for that also like an exacto knife if you want those harsher outline style highlights..GL and have fun with it..

They don't work too great on hard surfaces. They take the paint all the way off. But even on good paper you can cut all the way down to the base of the paper. Erasing and scraching does not work on cheap paper. But you need all sorts as has been mentioned previously.
