OK friends. I'm going to do it. I'm going to dive in and do an airbrush portrait (lord help me). Now keep in mind, my background is not in painting. But I just watched Mitch's video on how to blend skin tones (How to Blend Skin Tone - YouTube) I'm confused. Are you saying that you should start out by painting in Opaques then go over it again with transparents? Let me know. I'm always willing to take advice. Thanks. BTW, it's nice to be back.

Hi, it depends on what color surface you are going to paint. Is white - it doesn't matter opaque or transparent colors. First make some points of a face (I use my own stencil - print a picture of an exact size, carve eyes, lips, eyebrows and so on and blow these places with dark color). Then just start working with "far" places (neck, hair, ears and come close to nose finally). Hope you understand what I mean..) Good luck!

The reason he show opaques first is because once you have paint the color that is the only color it will be , While starting with transparent the more layers you add the darker the color it becomes and also when you layer transparent colors over each other they can Muddy up sometimes
Mixing you opaques is like buffering them . They will only go that color no darker. When he uses the transparent colors it is to give a bit more life to the painting. enhancing the colors already there.

I've seen Mitch's video and that's like I do them. I use an overhead projector so all I have to do is copy my subject on to a transparency draw outline lightly on paper then start matching skin tones it's great fun.

Hmm yet you make no introduction to tell us anything about yourself....

Hi, I'm Russ, I suck at portraits! Theres my introduction Mr Micron, lol. Im just in here soakin up some knowledge as I will be taking lessons from one of my favorite mentors and all time greats Mr. Ryan Townsend himself!! I've watched about every portrait video out there, just haven't had time to apply what I've soaked in, figured if I would drop some dough and set a date, I would be forced to take some time for it, haha. Interesting thread, keep em' comin
