I have many idols, with Mache being the most inspirational sneaker customizer I have ever seen.

I see his customizations and they absolutely blow me across the room and I sit there, trying to work out as to HOW he would actually go about doing it.

I have one simple question for each viewer who views my thread, and if you have ANY knowledge as to going about doing it, then please enlighten me and it would be a massive learning curve for me.

With this spider-man inspired Air Jordan 4, it appears to me that the black web on the red upper midsole, is created by using free-hand control and 'eye of the tiger' vision, however the black netting that appears on the toe box and all the lower midsole with a blue background, has absolutely puzzled me.

I would only think that it is a stencil, as that netting is perfectly spaced apart, but how would he go about, stenciling the whole entire thing? As if he has wrapped a net around the trainer? I am a newbie, as I have stated, and I really have no clue as to how he did this and would be thrilled if somebody could at least feed me some information as to how he possibly went about doing this so perfectly!

Many thanks to you all who are willing to contribute your thoughts, as I will be creating an artpiece soon from Sneakers and hope to show my learned techniques and skills to you all!

I think the shoes were black and then he just used a spider web mask and the netting mask and painted the other colours in.

So basically, what you are saying is, to coat the whole upper and lower midsole in black, then get the spider web mask on the upper midsole, then spray the spider web spaces in red, which would then leave the black lining of the web? And also do the same for the toe box and lower midsole, except you would be colouring it in blue over a netting mask, which would then again, leave the black lines from the first black coat? Thank you for your feedback and comment, it is honestly such a helping hand.

Its a trick that is also used a lot to do scales or snake skin. See this youtube movie:

Such a simple trick but so stupid of me not to realize, thank you so much, I knew it must of been a stencil of some sort! I could not of seen him doing that freehand so perfectly, otherwise then it definitely would have blown me across the country xD! Thank you yet again, I will be having many more questions to bombard and I hope I can rely on you as a fellow airbrusher to help me! :D

I'm always on the look out for things to use as masks. you would be surprised how many cool things you can find in the catering section of hardware shops and super markets ;)

Buy a bag of oranges, same shape as the circle thingies
Thats another masking item that could be used! On smaller areas I suppose? Fishnet leggings would be a lot better on covering a much bigger area, along with keeping all the netting squares in sync, otherwise you would have to keep moving the orange netting as its too small and line it up properly, which I could see as frustrating but for smaller items a definite yes!

Hahah I'm new to the masking game, but plan on finding many items for different techniques and styles!

You'll be surprised how many things laying around your house you can use Lol. Nothing is sacred at my house. Everything from clothes, lace, packaging, trash, pastry brushes, kitchen utencils with interesting patterns like a potato masher, non slip matting, tumble dryer sheets, the list is practically endless.
