Ok I had a go at Clint... I'm now gonna be brave (or a 2hat). I'm going to have a bash at the other.. No practice, in start to finish. May take a while, but I'll post as I do it.

Step 1... Laid out image using graphite paper onto 3mm foam board. CAM00061.jpg

Good on you for trying both. I am sure you will learn a ton of things on this one.

I found that last piece i did on a, foam type, board worked well except it can catch the pencil lines from the side when in the light. Basically where i had pressed a little too hard ( even though i erased them). Not sure if this will be an issue for you on that particular board but just a heads up before you get in any further.
Hasnt really spoiled the piece but just would have preferred not to be able to see the lines:(

That's why I don't use foam board. You will never get that embossing out. I would start over if I'm you.

Think I'm gonna rewind... tried a bit of painting today and found that trying to control an airbrush around an eye while sneezing just dont work.... So... In a fit of *&%^^&£%&*... you get the idea... I dumped the rest of the paint and made a smily face... Screwed up my start, gimme a chuckle.. Anyway gonna get thru my man-flu before trying again.

It helps to keep it away from your face too, I can't count the number of times my wife thought I had measles after a good sneezing session:confused:

While I have used foam core board it is not for folks like me who are heavy handed .
Dents , dings and even a thumb print But erasing and scratching works great on it.

I used foamex (is that the same?) a few times, and find a soft pencil that you can use lightly works fine. It was actually tougher than I thought, or maybe I am daintier than I thought....nah, that can't be right.
