ive been thinking bout painting some tanks motorcycle, helments, do i need a high velocity spray gun or can i get by with my bottom feed iwata eclipse for large area coverage.... not want to spend more money..
Start with a mini gun. Only thing is you can then get a cheap Harbor freight model for primer, primer needs a big nozzle, like 1.8mm. Get a decent mini you trust. I actually use a Kobalt. Not expensive at all. Almost bought a Devilbis though. They are usually a .8 or 1.0mm nozzle. I painted my whole bike with one, with Duplicolor paint shop lacquer, it worked ok. Now I have an LVLP gun for primer and my mini for everything else.
Its just a Kobalt mini gun from Lowes. The DevilBis starting line is a good brand name gun to start with too, but will be more money . If its for simple starter work, no reason a low priced HF or ebay gun wont work. You just may need to do more sanding . The better the quality of the gun the better it can potentially spray. Just like airbrushes.
If you're truly looking for a budget gun I would at least go to a auto parts store and see what they have, Normally you will find a decent gun that will last quite awhile...However, spending money [or a few dollars more] on a nice gun I don't feel is a waste, because you will see the difference in atomization, useful especially for metal flakes.

thanks jenn,, i have a cobalt,, im more into detail ,, im just looking for something to put a clean base coat down... thanks for the advice.. anyway ive never used a spray gun so i was painting my brother van,, i loaded my kobalt with createx white a little water and sprayed,,, damn it was large clumps of water,, i was like wtf my brother is going to kill me ... but i wiped it off with a towel cleaned it and painted the pic with my iwata... damn i am such an amateur...
Ok... Now I just dont get it, Shouldn't the question be #1 How big is your compressor???...#2, Why are you using Waterborne at all for that project???...#3, What kind of budget are you working on??? And finally #4, Do you need some help with your brothers van ???... A budget gun at this point sounds like a good choice however, A HVLP gravity feed, with a middle of the road tip size for versability.
