Masking paper

I have bought Masking paper on a acetate film so I can assume it is quite flimsy.
I want to make a one off mask for a pair of antlers and back ground on clayboad that only problem I can see is lifting the thin cut masking paper from the board and then reapplying to my painting is there a easy way to achieve this.

any advice greatly received

I failed to mention that the masking paper is just that paper and not clear film it also feels like micropore tape

use some transfer tape. http://coastairbrush.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Automask__Masking_&_Transfer_Tape_by_Coast_Airbrush
makes it real easy. i usually damp down the tack of the transfer tape on my pants leg to so that it is easier to remove the stencil.

I have now ordered frisky film mask as the paper mask isn't see through. Foe the posive side I thought I would use a shield.

Good luck with the Frisket James, I switched to duct tape just so I could be less surprised at the results:)

After a couple of bad experiences with Frisket and other films I tried I refuse to place anything sticky backed on my work, other than taping a border before I start painting, if I need to mask anything I usually cut up one of my prints and hold it in place using magnets, with neodymium magnets it works also on clayboard with enough magnets, if magnets can't be used tiny squares can be cut out of the mask and smaller pieces of masking tape over rhese squares will hold it.

There is nothing worse than spending 20+ hours on getting something right only to pull the lot off with the masking film or tape:eek:
 
Transfer tape is awesome. But for one off masks I usually just use regular paper, so I can just draw out my image, or even print it. If you want it see through you could maybe try tracing paper, then you can trace an image I guess. But regular paper works just fine. I cut little triangles out of it in strategic places and stick masking tape over them to hold it down where needed. And if you carefully spray away from any edges they don't lift, so you won't get underspray. Also the great thing about claybord is that even if you did get a little underspray you can erase it really easily.

I don't like triangles, I prefer squares:p:p:p

Everyone knows triangles are better than squares lol. For example, if you cut your sandwich into little triangles, you only get one piece of crust per triangle. Fooled my kids with this for years lol. And for every square you can get a minimum of two triangles, which is obviously better. Besides squares are so.....square lol, and I would never describe you as a square Malkypoos. You are definately more triangle. There, you see, I win. :laugh::D:p

"Malkypoos", Lady @Squishy, really?o_O @Malky:poo::poo:, whether the holes are square, triangle, star shaped, or hexagons, it looks to me like you got "squished" ;) lol

It's something I will have too live with also refine as some of my own clayboad are 18mm thick and a magnet will never hold the masked area is only at it's thickest about 4 mm thick and about 75 mm tall the rest I will use a precut sheild if the image cut out off cardboard/white card. I thought I could clean the masked area with thinner and a cotton bud or key the small area with a rubber/ 2000 grit wet and dry glued to the end of a cuticle stick even a cocktail stick and a fine glass fibre pencil. The back ground of my painting/ test piece has only a fine hint of colour.

On a serious note (I can do it, honest lol) a hole punch is useful if the punch can reach, and if it's easy to line up and get it exactly where you need. The advantage of triangles (and I guess squares, though as I have already undisputably proved triangles are better :D)is you can fit a tiny triangle very precisely in any area of the artwork, even the middle where a hole punch may not reach. Also if you only cut two sides of the triangle and make a flap, you can easily fold it back, tape to hold down the art work, then remove the tape and fold the flap back down preserving the image. I have found this useful in some of the more intricate things I've done also, where features are close together and you don't want too many holes next to each other, and it also keep the space below triangles clean should you need to move tape and can just fold the flap down.

I like vinyl transfer tape, I have a 60cm wide roll so I can cove pretty much anything. Not tried it on claybord but never had a problem on any other surface.
