My brother is a coal miner and he wants me to airbrush his hard hat. I've never worked on plastics and I have no idea how to prep it for paint. Is there a general process for prepping plastic? What kind of primer do I need...etc?

What I do is, scuff it down, just basic primer, paint, and automotive clear coat. But, thats me, others do it different im sure. (Ya can use red scotch brite pad)

An plastic adhesion promotor would be highly recommended. I personally hate bulldog in a can but if that's what you have to use so be it. I prefer dupont d222. You need to make sure on his OSHA regulations for the hardhat if he plans on wearing it to work. A painted hardhat is deemed unsafe by OSHA due to changing the integrity of the plastic. I think it's bs but we don't make the rules

same with DOT on helmets that is why you always want to make sure to cover any DOT tags on them so they can see they are there.
The coal mine here make them wear the old metal head gear and those can be painted with no problem. Even the Limestone mills here make them wear metal.
