As I’m about to start painting again, I was browsing my old pics (trying to remind myself how the f**k I did it if I’m honest) and realised I have enough pics for a step by step for the forum, so here goes:

After a quick prep of the surface, I sketch out the main features of the subject, and then starting with the eyes (because if they are wrong, it will ALL look wrong) I start with a 1:1 mix of HoK black and get the darkest areas mapped out, and follow it up with a 1:4 mix shading and getting textures built up nice and early by erasing with whatever works, whether it’s an eraser, blade, fibreglass pencil, or even sandpaper.

Once I’m happy with the first, I then move across to the other, with the same technique.

I then move around the picture, picking areas that are dark as a starting point each time (in this case the area below the cheek), linking them up to another area using the 1:4 mix and erasing.
Bottom right you can see use of a blade and fibreglass pencil to create hair textures, and also contrast with the dark background.

More of the same as we go...............

Once I’m happy, it’s the quick border, and ‘bosh’, done.........

    Thanks for sharing,
i also start with the eyes. As you say, if they're wrong then nothing else looks right, and i'm also worried that i'd put hours and hours into the rest of the piece only to have it look ghastly when i do the eyes wrong :D
