Rescuing a cheap airbrush for $3

Detail Decepticon!
Hello,

Knockoff airbrushes are not necessarily a bad thing. Some of them can be quite competent depending on the intended job. I have had a Central Pneumatics 1500 in use for over 30 years, which is a knockoff of the Badger 150 and it still works perfectly fine.
I saw this neglected airbrush online. Been a Central Pneumatics (Harbor Freight's brand) Deluxe airbrush I thought it was a knockoff of the Badger 155 Anthem. I bid $3 and forgot about it. A few days later, I won it!
Beaten up case and missing the jar and the hanger. But the airbrush itself looks complete.

To my surprise, while not necessarily a bad thing, it turns out it is just the same 150 knockoff with a handle and needle tail to LOOK like a 155 Anthem. That's sneaky :)
The nozzle was severely clogged and most parts had an oily residue. The needle had a slight bend at the tip that was corrected before polishing. Everything was cleaned inside and out. Luckily, I was able to find in my parts box one O-ring to replace the head's missing piece.
The head has some telltale marks of overtightening and slipping. It may be related to the missing O-ring.
Word of caution: Instead of teflon seals like more expensive models, these airbrushes rely on O-rings that are not solvent resistant. So never dunk these into lacquer thinner or any other harsh solvent.

May I present my "new" $3 airbrush

The paint cup was also cleaned but I am not sure I like the design. I don't see this working too well with very small amounts of paint.

Anyways, it was tested and it is working very nicely! Maybe not as smooth as a premium airbrush, but very usable. Definitely way above the $3 price range :)

I hope you like and approve. As usual your comments and questions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Ismael

Hello,

Coming back to this one. It works, but the trigger is far from smooth. (What do you expect from a $3 airbrush? ;) )
I took it apart again. Short of replacing the needle spring, I adjusted it for the least compression I could get within the very limited range. The packing seal screw was slightly loosen up and finally, I polished the rubbing surfaces. I noticed the trigger sides were quite rough. So I smoothed and polished it.

At the end, all these little tweaks helped the trigger feel. I mean, it is still a cheap airbrush but very usable. Interestingly, I noticed in testing that at the wide end, the pattern is not as wide as others. In other words, I don't see this been used to paint something big like an RC car or a big scale model body. But should work perfectly fine on something like a Hot Wheels or for smaller details.

Thanks,
Ismael
