Yet another Scott MacKay tutorial lol.
I really enjoyed this piece. Backgrounds have always been a tough area for me, but this one really pushed as the background is such a big part of the over all image. Used some cool techniques for texture on this too.
I was pretty pleased that this one ended up reposted by Iwata with links to the products I used. That was pretty cool.

This was a follow along project from Scott MacKay’s live feed. (I know, I’m a fanboy).
Still it was cool using only candy colours and a simple papercut mask. This was one where I started to feel like my skulls were turning out ok.
I don’t have the desire to paint photo realism. I hugely respect the skill it needs, but the more heightened graphic style floats my boat.

Used a plotter to cut the fmasking for this Paint Pal. I did not want to try cutting all the stars by hand. It was cool to now be able to paint an image for the Paint Pal rather than just an image that I thought I could pull off.

Further walks into pop culture pieces. I used papercut stencils to set up freehand, which has been my approach since starting. I’m just beginning to get better at it slowly lol.

Man. I’m just now realising how many Scott MacKay projects I’ve done lol. Whatever, this was a cool one using a plotter to cut masking and removing in a sequential order to avoid having to back mask anything. It’s a great learning project to try.

The Frankenstein piece put me in the mood to paint some other monsters so a Vampire was next. One of the coolest Vampires in movie history. This was the first piece starting pretty much exclusively with a mid tone grey and building / shading from there.

And the follow up to complete the Monster trilogy. I always loved this image of the werewolf mid transformation. Fun piece. Same techniques as the last.

And that about brings me up to date. Holy crap I underestimated how long it would take to post all of this. But it’s been a fun trip down memory lane. I’ll try and keep this thread up to date now that I’ve managed to get it going.
Thanks for looking.

These logs are certainly a great visual reminder about how far we’ve come.
If you can remember, can I suggest dating each picture, (“early 20xx” will suffice) not only does it show you how much you’ve improved, it shows newbies how many of us progress.

You have certainly improved and good on you for pushing out of your comfort zone, it worked lol
Utilising great artists for guidance is a great way to learn and understand techniques and we are very lucky that technology allows access to so many greats.
I will try and get mine up to date by the end of the week, I’ve been really slack :(

Thanks Boss!
Adding a date is a great idea. It shouldn’t be too hard as all the pics are on my phone and the date stamp should be saved.
Yes, following tutorials and live streams is a fantastic tool that we’re lucky to have. But I’ll never forget that I wouldn’t have gotten to a position to be able to attempt them without the help I got here.

Doesn’t need to have a day, a general month and a year would be sufficient.
I agree this place is a great support network as go on your journey. I would never have believed I was capable of what I produce, but I really really need to put more time into it

Cool. I’ll look to edit those in over the next couple days.
Time is the constant battle for me. I’d really love to be able to paint all the time. But the reality is that it’s a “when I can” kinda deal. But I am hoping to improve that next year. Not to full time or anything lol. But freeing up more time is the goal.

Well that was a great read.
I remember when you joined the forum and your first paintings. You've come a long way mate. This forum is an amazing space and we are all one big AB family. I've thought about a log several times but I'm so lazy it will never get updated :) AND it will take a while like yours did. lol I'll consider it again :)

Thanks Mate! It was crazy going back to my first pieces. Also thinking about the friends I’ve made along the way too. Never would have met you and Anne if it weren’t for this place. We’re some lucky folk. I’d like to see your artist log when you get round to it!

I’ve been through and added Month and Year to each piece. August 2017 was the first one! It doesn’t seem that long ago lol.

That was a fun ride, Si! Thank you for sharing all of that.
Thanks Dude! I never think that I have much to bring to the table from a POV of teaching anything. But if nothin else it shows that a little perseverance may pay off.

Don’t be so hard on yourself, we all have something to bring to the table and seeing others journeys can encourage newbies and show them that we all started in the same place
