So many airbrushes

I originally bought an airbrush and compressor to paint Airfix models, but since owning the kit I have been playing around with it and with a little bit of internet research found that they are very versatile tools.

I bought the following airbrush and compressor: Mini airbrush and compressor Kit - AS18-2 Kit 1 from Amazon

Admittedly this probably isn't the best equipment, but I thought for the price it was a good purchase to get me started.
The airbrush is a gravity fed dual action model and has a 0.3mm(?) needle that can't be changed for a finer needle (I believe), so I am unsure what my limits are with this brush.

What type of airbrush is best to do fine lines (and illustration), and what airbrush is best for model painting?

I am currently going through the exercises on this forum, (lines, dots, daggers, color wheels etc).
Has anyone got any other sources of information for beginners?

Thanks in advance for the help.

really buddy this whole site is aimed at the questions you are asking, spend a little time to look through the section on front page called "airbrushes", there is so much info and you will get a better and more detailed description on a multitude of brushes

in brief though, you want a fine detail brush for model painting, something with a needle ranging from 0.15 up to around 0.22mm, if you have any real specific questions about an individual brush or 2 then get back to us, hope this helps

Hi neil i have just purchased a similar kit of amazon but got the AS18K, came with a 0.2 suction and 0.3 gravity AB and a pistol moisture trap. How are you finding the compressor, i ask as it is what i really bought the kit for the compressor and airline and have subsequently bought an IWATA HP-C Plus 0.3 AB and some quick disconnect fittings.

How are you getting on with your new found hobby, i've yet to start :(

I think that ebay might be your friend here as there are a lot of needles and needle cap kits from the cheaper chinese models. Probably built the same as the ones shipped with this AS18 Kit. Are there any serial/model numbers stamped on the brush at all.

If you have the money then a branded AB would be the best way to go.

I will try out my chinese knock offs to see if i prefer the feel of a gravity or suction fed, Especially if i want to spend £££ on a quality micron in the future, but im fairly confident that i will settle with gravity.

Let me know what you decide on and how you get on with it.

I found this really useful

If the gear is not giving you fits, spend a couple of weeks playing with what you have.
I personally use a iwata eclipse hp cs almost exclusively and it is a .35
I also have a badger Krome with a .2 and there is little difference in fine line ability. Both are excellent brushes.
Arguing for the best brush is almost like arguing ford versus chevy, with a majority of users sticking with iwata.
