    Hey all...
I finally have some time and funds to work on my new hood for my truck. The one on the truck is rusted on the front and it is just a matter of time before it flies off while driving....Here is a pic of what my truck is...a 2004 Chev Colorado...
    001 (2).jpg
I found a new hood on the interweb last February and got it for $125 and he even dropped it off at my house. Can't go wrong for that price.

Here are some pics of the progress so far. To keep my costs at a minimum I decided to go with rattle cans. I picked up a dark grey primer. I did some research on what color is best under a yellow and there really was not any definite answer on what they used at the factory. (surprise surprise lol) I did a spray out as I proceeded, and it was so close to the actual truck color, I was happy with my choices. I had the factory yellow mixed at my local Carquest. I also decided to keep costs down and leave the underside of the hood black. I back masked to stop over spray.

scuffed/sanded primed painted ready for graphics

It is now in the shed curing and I am waiting to start the layout. I am going to go with a black tribal flame with a tribal skull in the center. The flames will have black candy ghost skulls inside and the tribal skull kept all black. Here are the design renderings. I will also carry this design down the sides of the truck after the hood is done and installed. I like the black and yellow combo and think it will look good after done.....

    Let the fun begin.......
    Cheers and wish me luck....

Awesome project Tony! I’m looking forward to see this progress. I love a good truck and a custom painted one is even better.

Looks good so far, and digging the design, can't go wrong with yellow and black. I didn't know they still sold Lacquer for auto.

My hood is needing spraying too, wish I had another ride to do it.

Live a couple blocks from the ocean not sure how good the salt would be for it, probably just paper/tape it off and spray it like I did the roof, it's a work truck and already has paint all over it as is:cool:

I did some more work on the hood. Layed out the flames and skull using 1/8 FBS proband orange fineline tape.
I started with the tribal flames on one side. I wasn't to sure how to keep both sides the same. I do not have a pounce wheel so I came up with this solution. I put a piece of kraft paper over the design and used a crayon on its side and rubbed over the tape giving me the image. I then cut on the inside so I could flip it and place it on the other side and put the tape around it. It came out pretty close to the original side.

I started the tribal skull in the center only doing the one side and using the same transfer technique as the flames

The black sealer is done. It was perfect in the shed this morning, 22c and a humidity of 56%. I was going to use my mini gun, but decided to use my Talon with the #3 set up. It is a 6. something and the sealer laid real smooth. I mixed the sealer with 10% 4012 and worked fine.
Now I can start the skulls inside the flames....

It has been awhile since I had a chance to work on the hood. Life got in the way. I have now changed the color that will be used. I was going to just do white and black skulls inside the flames, but now I have decided to go with some actual color. Red Candy....
I did a few samples to see what it will look like against the yellow base.
I started with a background of textured silver using a fx stencil
    IMG_2773 (2).JPG
I then did a quick skull using white and black over the textured silver. I want to make it look like the skulls are attached but coming forward off the background.
    IMG_2774 (2).JPG
Used candy 2o blood red and a quick clear. The silver behind the skull really pops and shimmers compared to the whiter skull. Hard to get a good photo....
    IMG_2778 (2).JPG
Here it is against the yellow
    IMG_2781 (2).JPG IMG_2781 (3).JPG

I will use the fx texture in silver on the center tribal skull with no skulls inside.
I am starting the background and skulls today, so I will be committed to this choice. Fingers crossed...lol
    Cheers

That looks great twood. The colours work well together and the Candy looks really cool over the skull. Good luck with it Buddy!

@twood That mottled silver background looks incredible. Sort of like galvanizing and sort of like Damascus steel. Very cool effect.

I got a chance to paint this morning and laid the foundation for the entire hood. I did the first skull and will continue using this format for the next 20-30 skulls being done.
IMG_2789 (2).JPG texture and black mapping
    IMG_2790 (2).JPG some white
    IMG_2791 (2).JPG some shadowing
    IMG_2792 (2).JPG more highlights
    IMG_2793 (2).JPG shadows
IMG_2794 (2).JPG more texture and black around flame edges to keep the black contrast against the yellow base
    IMG_2795 (2).JPG closer look....
I will come back and maybe add a little texture once the skulls are in.
I am loving it so far.....lol
Cheers and thanx for all the encouragement so far
