so i thought this was a good question lol. What makes a detail brush, just that, and what makes a standard brush? tip size? set up? this all comes about with the fact that i have been interested in the Badger Renegade Spirit but i was told that its a detail brush, why is it and so many others considered detail brushes?

thanks

Mostly just what you stated. The spray pattern on the .21 Renegade setup is capable from Hairline to about a 1" spray pattern. Depending on what size paintings you plan on doing should determine the brush that would be best for you.
I personally do mostly illustration, I have 3 (#4 the is on the way, I have a problem) "detail" brushes and a workhorse.

Thanks that actually helps alot. I wasnt sure i wanted a Renegade but a fan of roughly 1 inch and less is something that i am in need of, I have a no name double action im using now and i use that for blasting down my base colors.
When it comes to general duty brushes would you suggest a siphon feed? Also what size tip is good for a general purpose brush?

Thanks again

It comes down to preference. I prefer gravity feed because of what I paint. I personally will not buy a siphon brush unless I start doing murals or something where the paint really needs to be laid down. The only slight negative for a siphon feed is it can take a few more pounds of air pressure to operate than a gravity feed, because the paint has to be pulled up the tube against gravity. The difference in PSI needed is marginal, so I wouldn't let that effect your decision.

What are your plans for painting? T-Shirts, Murals, Illustration, Automotive?

Another aspect of a good detail brush is its ability to atomize paint better. Many of the not so detail oriented brushes spray just fine, but may not work well at lower pressures which is where most detail is done.

As for siphon feeds, just what Jeff said, also you would have to use bottles of paint, or a small awkward cup. With a gravity feed just a few drops op faint are needed. Makes swapping paint fairly easy when doing illustration work.

I never realized how much application affects. My painting plans are automotive and illustration

one last thing not mentioned is the air brushes ability to do fine lines when you want it to in other words any air brush with a .2 set up or finer can do fast super fine hairlines but I have noticed out of my 4 good brushes micron, cmsb, krome, velocity and infinity only the miicron and krome only seem to do a super fine line on demand like doing small feathers the other two i have to pres down pull back and hope the paint is actually going to come out as i want it to. I blame this on the fact that the gun may or may not have a perfect seal around the nozzle and needle bearing .both are very important also the design of the micron it seems to work flawlesly becaquse the way the whole fluid head is desighned also since using com art and efx i have not once had to remove the nozzle to clean it i usually take off the whole head assembly . air brushes like the renegades are awesome guns i will buy another kronme before most any other gun but one tiny clogged hole in the regulator or hold down ring and its not going to work the same . the biggest thing is the seal on the nozzle and how clean the opening in the cap or regulator . if thats all good and the gun is working perfectly you should be able to lay down some micro daggers and have some realistic eyelashes . that is a good detail gun.
by the way the whole renegade group are the same except for the trigger and coating on the krome
